“Uncomfortable beds, great food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2007

The hotel and grounds are beautiful. As previous writers have commented, the beds are hard - very hard indeed. We stayed in four hotels in Slovenia and this was the only one in which we encountered this problem. The rooms are charming, although dark, but that is the nature of the building. For a Relais and Chateaux hotel there were a number of small faults: towels and toiletries were not replaced, wardrobe doors did not lock etc. The restaurant, however, is excellent, although we agree with the earlier contributor that the lack of indication about price is disconcerting. In addition, without sight of a menu, the form that the meal was meant to take was unclear. We were uncertain whether we were expected to eat our way through the menu or choose from the dishes described (it appears to be the former, although you can pick and choose as well).

“A Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 June 2007

We stayed here for one night on our way to Croatia, having visited Bled, Bohinj, The Julian Alps, etc. and were very pleased we did.

There doesn't seem to be much in the immediate area, but Kendov Dvorec is definitely worth a stay if passing anywhere nearby.

The property, originally 14th Century, is charming in the extreme and our bedroom was beautiful. I accept the earlier opinion that the beds are hard, but we found this throughout Slovenia and consider this to be a minor criticism.

There is a wonderful courtyard and orchard-like garden in which to enjoy a drink, or even breakfast or dinner. The restaurant itself and food served within it are up to the standards expected from a Relais & Chateaux property.

Our only genuine criticism would be that, on our visit at least, every element of service seemed to be carried out by just one young man who acted as receptionist, porter, barman and waiter.

Whilst he was commendably willing and able and the hotel is only small, there is only so much one person can do and service was subsequently a little slow on occasions.

Still, this shouldn't overly detract from what is an individual establishment of high quality and considerable charm and character.

“Frantastic place to stay”

We stayed at the Kendov Dvorec for 3 nights. We received a very friendly welcome and were made to feel like part of the family. Our room was lovely, a nice view, plenty of space and comfortable beds. Dining in the restaurant was a great experience. The waiting staff were very knowledgable and helpful. The food and wine was first class. We would definately stay there again.

“Hard beds!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 June 2006

The hotel is certainly different from the usual pastel modern hotel rooms. They all contain old traditional furniture. It does make the rooms rather dark and the beds were certainly on the firm side! I had a rather small room (D) with a vertical pillar by the bed which made it slightly cramped. However the bathrooms were modern and well equipped (although I had a broken hairdryer). The breakfast was well done but it was a pity they didnt provide a cooked breakfast to order. The dinner there was quite good, and nice setting on a terrace overlooking a steep valley, but confusingly they didnt provide a price list so you didnt know how expensive it was going to be which was rather worrying.

“Best small hotel we have ever stayed at !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 February 2005

Came upon by chance whilst touring Slovenia by car in September, 2004. Hotel not easy to find but worth looking for. Very friendly owners who were rightly proud of their beautiful establishment. As soon as we arrived we were offered a (free) tasting of the new seasons wine - delicious! Our room was a small suite , very charming with glorious views of the village down the valley. There was no formal menu for dinner but the patron chef came to our table to explain the meal and we were then served a wonderful array of local specialties with a bottle of local wine to accompany it. The following day the helpful owner told us about the 'Resistance' Hospital museum up in the hills nearby - which we would not otherwise have known about, and is not to be missed ! Not a cheap hotel, but unforgettable !
