“Great apart from the food”

This hotel is in a nice, quietish spot on the edge of Portoroz. Excellent facilities and room. But one almighty exception. The food is awful. A buffet always means poor quality in my experience but this was the worst I've experienced by a long way, even in 0 star hotels. The food was put out on the hot plates 20-30 minutes early so the vegetables were stewed, the mean and pasta crispy, the sauces congealed. It was always too cold and there was no imagination at all. Fortunately there are lots of cheapish, decent quality places to have a good lunch. The staff are good and if they moved to an ordinary menu it would be a top-notch hotel. Portoroz itself is a lovely place - lots to do - lots of easy walks that few people seem to do but they give great views. Public transport not bad. Easy to get to Piran, Tieste, Ljubijana, Croatia, etc. The Inghams rep is very good. I enjoyed the holiday a lot, but wish B&B had been an option. The food wasn't worth a euro!

“No sea view from the Hotel Marita - don't believe the brochures”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2010

We paid extra for a room with a sea view but there wasn't one. The hotel is built in its own gardens not a parkland. Some rooms face towards where the sea is but it is impossible to see. Our sea view room overlooked the swimming pool and other rooms faced inland towards another hotel. When we complained we were advised that the rooms faced towards where the sea is. To reach the sea you had to walk out of the hotel, cross the road, walk alongside a sports area for tennis where you reached a marina and could see the sea. The Ingham's brochure for 2010 asks you to pay extra for a room with a sea view, which we did, but we did not get one and neither did anyone else! There is no beach in Portoroz. The dinner buffet trays often ran out of popular items and were not re-filled.

“A bit good, a bit bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2010

We stayed one week at the Marita Hotel. It is located at the quieter end of Portoroz so no noise from bars etc. It is set back from the main road so you do not hear the traffic. There is both an indoor and outdoor swimming pool. The outdoor one has plenty of sunloungers (although not very comfortable) and sun parasols. You can get vouchers from reception which you exchange for pool towels. The pool staff are very attentive - bringing out cushions for the sunloungers and parasols if required for your use.

The hotel is modern in appearance. There is a small bar in the garden to the front of the hotel but it is not always open. Afternoon tea or coffee and biscuits were included with our booking and this is served on a patio at the front of the hotel. The reception staff were very helpful.

We had booked a seaside room which was located in the main building. The room was modern with a nice balcony. The fittings in the room hadn't been well planned. The lighting was very poor and the wardrobe door opened awkwardly - meaning you couldn't get into the drawers of adjoining cabinet at the same time. There was little hanging space in the wardrobe so we were not able to hang up all our clothes.
The bathroom was a reasonable size and nice and clean. The shower was located above the bath. There was no shower curtain and it was impossible to keep the flow of water contained inside the bath - it accumulated along the inverted rim of the bath which meant each time you had a shower you had to mop up to absorb this water as there was nowhere for it to go except the floor.

The chamber maids were attentive. As soon as you left your room for breakfast they were in to make the beds and change the towels and clean the bathroom. I think this is all they do, as the balcony was not cleaned nor the room dusted or vacuumed during our stay.

The food was not up to standard for a 4 star hotel. Most people we met were very disappointed with the evening meals. Both breakfast and dinner are buffet type. At breakfast they also serve made to order eggs and omlettes. For dinner there was usually a choice of three main courses - which were always nicely cooked, but the dishes on offer were on the whole disappointing and not what you would expect from a hotel of this grading. The restaurant staff were efficient - at breakfast sometimes too efficient, clearing people's tables when they had simply gone to get extra from the buffet or a coffee and returning to find their table cleared and set for the next customer!

This was our third visit to this part of Slovenia. I like the coast and we combine it with a week in the mountains. There are plenty of bars and restaurants around. Piran is a lovely place to visit and the bus stop is right outside the Marita.

“Looka good but could be better.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2010

Stayed in the main building of the hotel where room furniture design etc. is a bit quirky and not very practical for a hotel situation, watch out for your legs on the bed corners and your feet with some of the wardrobe doors. Cleaners could do with puting in a bit more effort, our balcony was not cleaned for the week we were there. Buffet meals offered very limited choice with tea/coffe at breakfast but not at dinner???? 'Fresh' fruit available at breakfast but very near its sell by date. Could do with more brollies at the pool area and the air conditioning in rooms left a lot to be desired.

“Pleasant Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2010

We arrived in Portoroz without any accommodations reserved. The first hotel we found ended up being a great find. It was close to main attractions but not in the main part of town so it was not as busy with travelers. The hotel has two pools, one indoor which was definitely a plus as it rained the next day. Breakfast was included (more than just continental) - I had a nice omelet prepared to my liking. Also, this town has limited parking so another benefit was the parking garage - also included in the price. Overall, this hotel was great, I would stay here again.
