“Excellent choice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2011

Excellent choice especially for the families with young children. It is not so expensive so it offers good value, in terms of facilities, position and services for the hotel rate. The position is great, situated on the seaside next to the walking area (lungo mare). In front of the hotel is one of the best (and our favorite one) sea food restaurants (Trattoria del pescatore Santa Lucia).

We stayed in standard room without balcony (which is the only one disadvantage). The cleaning standards are high. Well furnished rooms and the rest of hotel, modern and simple style. Swimming pools with sea water are very nice, clean and warm including jacuzzi. The breakfast is good, fresh and wide choice (except juice which is awfull). There is baby/children playing room with organized activities for the kids. There are also organized tours by the hotel which are payed extra. Parking is not free of charge, costs 9 EUR per day. Internet connection is limited - it is free of charge and available in the lobby and some rooms (we had difficulty to connect because there were obviously too many users).

Its recommendable to get the room with balcony/terrace.

“Dont expect relaxed mealtimes”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2010

Although the hotel itself is clean and bright and the pool nice there are some poor aspects. The restaurant is worse than a school dining hall - if you dont get there on the first sitting then you dont get the same choice of food - once its run out it is not replaced like for like. It was crowded and noisy and the food wasnt brilliant. This wasnt helped by the electricity failing on several evenings. I know thats not the hotels fault.
In the end we ate out every night as it was so not enjoyable eating there and not relaxing at all.
There were never enough beds outside of the pool in the grassy area but we were not allowed to take any more outside despite hardly anyone staying inside as the weather was so nice. The attendant wouldnt let us move them - I think because he had to bring them in at the end of the day - so we ended up lying on the grass.
The location is quite good - central and with buses to nearby historic Piran.

“no-frills hotel in great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 April 2009

I stayed here for one night and agree with most reviews that the bedrooms are quite ordinary. The floors are a bit hard and the beds a little soft. However, the staff was friendly and helpful and the pool/jacuzzi amenities were surprisingly good. The location is within walking distance to everything in Portoroz. I paid about $100 USD, which I thought was a reasonable bargain for the beginning of high season and the quality of the hotel. High speed internet is free, though it is just wired - no wireless. I would stay here again.

“Metropol's simplest choice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2006

Slovenia is a lovely little country. Unfortunately the beach region is just a few kms, so it tends to be crowded there. Italians like it because they get more for their Euro in Portoroz.

This report is about hotel Lucija. It is the simplest member of the Metropol hotel group (2-3 stars), but also the closest to the beach. You may use all their services including indoor pool and Casino/Evening Shows. If you are lucky you'll get a free parking lot and avoid using the garage built into the mountain crowned by the 5-star Metropol Palace.

The rooms are small, most come with a balcony, but we found the mediterranean food at Lucija's delicious and enjoyed walking "downtown" afterwards (in 3 min.) to frequent the ice parlours, cafes or dancing places.

The pool area of the Metropol group is very nice, but do not expect too much from their beach, you'll have to put your towel on pure concrete instead of grass or sand.

Considering the many competitive flight rates (Triest, Venice, Ljubljana, Klagenfurt ...) I would book the hotel directly using M's 10% club card instead of relying on an agency or going all the way by car.

If you want to spend even less money (half pension €45) then go to neighbouring historical Piran or continue to Croatia.
