This is the best located hotel in Celje, and the recent renovations have improved the hotel facilities exponentially. Unfortunately, they have not improved the management. I have been traveling to Slovenia multiple times a year for the last 11 years, including at least annual stops in Celje, and I have stayed at Evropa many times over the years. The General Manager of the property has been rude from day one, and he behaves as if every interaction with a guest is a chore.
On my most recent visit to the hotel, a Slovenian friend had reserved a room with two beds for my colleague and I, but upon arrival, the manager insisted that two beds doesn't mean the same thing in Slovenian as it does in English, and that he had a room with one large bed for us. He acted annoyed and tried to make us feel like he was doing something special by finding us a room with two beds.
As if this weren't enough, the toilet didn't work when we got to the room. When he came to fix the problem, we asked for the remote for the air conditioning unit in the room. He proceeded to tell us that it would cost 10% more per night. Hot and tired we agreed to pay the extra money, and he pulled the remote out of his back pocket - he had obviously assumed that the Americans would want AC and that he could extort more money from us.
Safe to say, I will never stay at this hotel again, or at least not until they have a new manager.
