I have stayed at this hotel twice before - in 1989 on my 1st visit to Bled and again in 1995.
Both times in the summer - this year we thought it would be a nice romantic place to stay for Christmas and sure enough when we arrived at Bled Jezero station on Sun 19th Dec there was snow everywhere and the sun was shining brightly, and even more so the next day. However, surprisingly, both the hotel and Bled is almost empty and, although it may fill-up on the Xmas weekend, we are going to move on before.
As for the hotel - just as it was in 1989 - a somewhat tired late 1960's Yugoslav-govt style establishment with a vast plain lobby with restaurant and bar to match. The reception staff speak English and are very helpful. We booked one of their best rooms - superior lake-view (@E74 dbl) on 2nd floor with large balcony - fabulous view of lakeside and castle on bluff, but not the island church which is obscured by trees. Unlike what other reviewers have experienced our room is spacious but plain, esp the bathroom - a small shower which doesnt mix the hot/cold water properly.
The TV - although an old CRT Philips - has a very good selection of English-language programmes - BBC, CNN, Nat Geo, Discovery - thankfully Slovenia uses sub-titles and does not dub..! Our remote control was a bit broken and didnt work properly tho.
The one obviously modern feature of our room was that it had a completely new double-glazed patio door and window unit. And, BTW, further adding to its great location - if you are planning to stay here in winter this is the side of the lake that gets all the sun - if you stay in the centre around the Park/Golf hotels your room wont get the sun which, as I have said, was glorious for our first 2 days.
I disagree with the reviewer who said the church bell chimes are disturbing - I find it quite charming and not loud altho admittedly we are on the side somewhat more distant from the church.
Breakfast basic but OK - but if you arrive after 9 the scrambled aggs and coffee etc are likely to be lukewarm. At 10 sharp the food is whipped away.
2 main gripes -
No teapots available and teabag tea in the tiny cups they offer, with barely hot water that has been sitting for hours in a vacuum flask, does not taste very good.
Wifi internet in room is an extra E5 per day..! (good connection though)
(BTW - I highly recommend the 2 hr train ride from Nova Gorica - on Italian border next to Gorizia - cost less than 6 euro each, train virtually empty, fabulous scenery)
