“Locaton good, room comfortable, facilities - what facilities?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2010

We booked two nights in September. Room comfortable, breakfast poor, staff - the only three we saw were helpful, though only one spoke English adequately. Facilities - bar/coffee shop although listed as being open till late was only open 7 till 9, restaurant did not appear to be open at all when we were there. When we complained about the lack of facilities, after all it turned out that our E115 per night only gave us bed and breakfast in what was supposed to be a four star hotel, we were told that the closed facilities were available in the Best Western Lovec next door. Kompas appears to be used as an annex to the Best Western Lovec and when not full the bar/coffee shop/restaurant do not open. This probably applies to the swimming pool, fitness etc. but we did not try to use these facilities. The information that the facilities were not always available was not on the hotel's website, the guest information in our room, or provided to us at check in - only when we complained on checking out. Must say though that on our complaint our bill was reduced by 10%. On the day we left the management appeared to be showing people round the hotel, and, surprise, surprise, the bar etc. opened. However this is not a four star hotel just an up market B&B. Good location though with only short walk to the lake. Definitely not worth the 115E we were charged per night.

“Great location, average hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2010

This hotel is around 2-3 minutes walk from Lake Bled itself. It is close to the bus stop to Ljubljana and lots of cafes and tourist shops. The hotel must have been built in the socialist era and parts of it would benefit from modernisation. The room I stayed in was clean. THe hotel staff were friendly and sorted out my wifi problem. The breakfast was ok but nothing special.

“Avoid it!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

Tempted by the website with summer bargain offer, pool facilities and nice photos we booked two nights with halfboard. What a shame! How can it be a four star? Having visited Slovenia several times during the 90's you are surprised to find a relict from the past that has totally avoided the transformation of this sympathetic country into a modern and hospitable welfare state with a high touristic service level.

Except from the modern reception area most of the place is worn down, dull and gloomy. Rooms are boring but somewhat OK. We didn't get one of those with lake view but a shopping center/parking view. The pool is very hot due to plastic roof, the surrounding relaxation area small and crowded, changing/shower facilities primitive. The restaurant, placed in basement, is dark and depressing, reminding of a dining hall from the Communist era. So does the restaurant service: Unengaged and very tired looking staff, obviously not motivated. Unattractive food, no current trimming of buffet etc.

Front desk staff friendly and slightly more engaged but no professional attitude. Electronic keys for room and electricity didn't work, which didn't affect the staff. Without further notice we were supplied with an ordinary key that was obviously less safe. Aircon in the room leaked on the second night leading to soaked carpet. Also this message was taken by reception without further notice. Apparently these things happen often.

Bled is crowded with tourists during high season which is no surprise. But no matter the crowds we did not find the town attractive. To enjoy the romantic sceneries go outside Bled, e.g. to western part of the lake near Cafe Belvedere. Also here you find ideal spots for lake swimming (follow the local people). North East of Bled visit the scenic Vintgar Gorge but be prepared on many other visitors.

We recommend to look for accommodation outside Bled. Either in the western part of the lake or in the area around Lake Bohinc 30 min away by car. Here you can get close to Triglav National Park in quiet surroundings and still reach Bled for a day trip if you want. In Bohinc area there are also apartments to rent in the little, interesting villages of Stara Fucina, Studor and Srednje.

“Don't think about it”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2010

...while you have a marvelous alternative just across the parking lot.

Kompas Hotel is supposedly a 4 star hotel, but can't even compete with some three stars in the same area. We stayed in a double room and it was impossibly cramped. You have to bend over backwards to get past the TV set to the balcony, for instance. The balcony is only large enough to hold one chair. Don't even get me started on the bathroom!

The hotel supposedly features free wired internet but that depends if the socket in your room is still working, or so does the reception staff say. You barely have room to put your toothbrush in front of the mirror. The furnishings are very old. The pool is a bad joke. The service sucks. We had to request cleaning in our room after two days and had to repeat it for a second time in the afternoon, only to be 'reminded' by the reception staff that they 'have a lot of rooms!'' And if they bother to change the linen, don't be surprised to find your clothes randomly thrown on the floor. Professionalism is not something they've heard of. If you can't find another place to stay and are stuck with this sad excuse for a hotel, don't take the half board deal. The so-called buffet dinner comprises 2-3 options at most. You're in the center of Bled and there are a lot of nice cafes around.

And of course don't buy the rack rate. When you look a little unsure about your stay, they offer you incredible margins on the original price. Probably out of desperation...

“Excellent Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2010

We used this hotel as a conference venue and were not disappointed. Quite the reverse. The conference rooms at the top of the chalet style hotel were spacious and well equipped and had beautiful views of Lake Bled with its mountain backdrop. It was not a perfect hotel but it was a perfect conference location for our purposes. The support given by staff was outstanding, from technical help, through to catering and the excellent conference organiser Teja.

We arrived at the weekend and found the breakfasts a bit basic. This improved markedly during the weekdays when we were sharing facilities with the Canadian Team for the World Rowing championships. We had one evening meal in a private dining room at the hotel, which was perfectly competent if not a stunning culinary experience. Local wines are extremely good as in most of Croatia.

Catering for our conference breaks was first class, with good coffee freshly made and a range of home-made cakes and fresh fruit.

The bedrooms were in essence, small suites. The furnishings were competent rather than stylish. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom had all the necessaries.

The hotel is situated just a couple of minutes walk from the beautiful lake with its coffee shops. The lake can be walked around in just over an hour, a beautiful undertaking in good weather.

I could not recommend this more highly for a conference. for a long holiday it might be a bit basic, but fine for a two or three night visit in the summer. I cannot really comment on using it for skiing - I suspect it would be fine.
