My wife and I went to Lublin in early September 2008 to attend a wedding, which was held in a small town about 40 miles away near the Bylerus border. The Grand Lublinianka was one of the choices on the wedding list and we selected it "in the blind". We had been driving around Poland for about ten days before we arrived at the Grand. It is one of the old style hotels...typical of those built a century ago.....we had a Superior Room, large, with extremely high ceilings, extraordinarily large bath and accoutrements typical of a four star property. We thought parking would be an issue, since the hotel is located in a densely packed section of town. They have a small courtyard with a locked gate in which they permit guests to park and with some shuffling at times, we were securely taken care of there....the staff were very helpful about parking....at any hour of the day or night....and the charges were modest. After staying in more modern hotels, typically, it was a little bit of s shock to be in this extremely quiet, stately and "cold" environment....but after a day or so we were acclimated and very happy. The staff were coolly friendly, almost old fashionedly formal in their deportment, but correct and helpful....no language barrier. The hotel is very conveniently located....near to everything to do with the old town...and the city is small enough that getting in and out is no problem. A highlight in the town (in the historical sense) is the Nazi death camp at Madjanek (inside the city limits). It is huge (2nd largest in the Nazi system), well preserved and very quiet.....it just speaks for itself....as opposed to Auschwicz, which is teeming with tour busses, organized tours and the like. At Madjanek you can wander about the premises at will and the static displays are well explained by posters in several languages. The breakfast in the hotel was "fair". They seemed to plan for a fixed number of guests and didn't replenish food supplies toward the end of the breakfast period.....so if you arrived rather late in the session you were left with what was left. Since we were involved in many off site wedding related activities we didn't take any other meals in the hotel. I would say that the Grand L is a very nice experience.....probably the best choice in town and reasonably priced. My internet connection was complimentary and very stable. They also loan laptops at the reception desk for use by guests in the lobby area....I saw several guests taking advantage of that service ....this seemed to be a common practice in Poland...we saw it in several locations. I never had even heard of Lublin before our trip there and it easily exceeded our expectations. Very interesting city. I would stay at the "Grand" again without even considering any alternatives.
