“Charming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

My friends and I just visited Zakopane midweek, in the off season, so we had the chance to actually look at a range of options and locations before we choose our lodging. We picked the Carlton. I would give it three stars and a halo although it is only listed as two stars. It was built in 1927 with attention to detail, high ceilings, good light, and understated elegance.
If you prefer wall to wall carpet and soap in a plastic wall dispenser, this is not the place for you. If you are loud and noisy, this is not the place for you. If you can smile at quirky things that have found a long term home here and appreciate the care that has gone into creating and maintaining a light, cozy, family business, you have found your home base in Zakopane. It is located on a side street, a five minute walk from the main shopping/eating street, breakfast is included, coffee and tea are always available, there is a sitting room (with fireplace, piano and plants) and a conversation space on each floor. There seems to be a wide variety of room configurations, many with a smaller, European scale, room size. All of the public areas are spacious and everything was very clean and well maintained.
This is my first ever review which I feel compelled to write since I said at least three time “I love this place!”. We struggled to describe the Carlton and finally settled on “Old World charm”, a little trite but true.

“Good Value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2010

My single room was small, the carpet was worn, and the floor creaked at every step, but the linens were spotless, the covers warm, a big window let in lots of light, and the price was a bargain. The hearty buffet breakfast is good preparation for an active day outdoors.

“Grand old guesthouse, great homely feel, set in lovely gardens”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 June 2009

We stayed in Zakopane for a few days and absolutely loved it.
The Villa Carlton was a lovely old guesthouse out of the main touristy hotspot. We could relax on the grand old balcony at the end of a huge day with a gin & tonic and overlook the surrounding gardens, with a view to the snow capped mountains. The staff were very helpful and were able to help me in English which I appreciated very much!
There was a beautiful old room in the foyer with a grand piano, lounge chairs with a flat screen, and wireless internet throughout the Villa.
All in all a great place to stay while exploring the sights. Will definately try and return.
We arrived late May when the wildflowers were blooming, but found it abit tricky to arrange 'tours'. Not to worry, there are enough english signs around to find the Cable Cars of Mt Gubalowka and Kasprowy Wierch (dont miss them!!!!) the Dunajec Gorge was difficult to organise and the tour company were abit lack lustre! I'm not sure of the name, but they were on the same road as the Bus station, on the opposite side of the road. very average and obviously sick of tourists! The Gorge raft trip was definately worth doing, such a beautiful float through the forests of Poland and Slovakia.
We found it very easy to walk to and from the main street for meals and it felt ok to walk at night with a friend.
The Villa also serves a great breakfast between 8-10am.
There is a long tradition of Poles coming to Zakopane to holiday or find artistic inspiration. We certainly felt that vibe staying here in the Villa Carlton! it was great.

“Decent value”

We stayed at this hotel for new year 2007 and enjoyed our stay. The room was a little warm, and there was some noise from the pipes in our room but it was an excellent price for new year and they let you stay for less than a week which is also helpful.

The location was good for town and the highstreet. The party we went to was great but the town was incredibly busy. I'd do it once but I think next year is a load of friends in a country house in wales for some peace!

The vodka was great though!
