“A vertical hotel with no elevator”

The Mikolaj is well placed near the Market Square and next to the Music Academy (which used to be communist party HQ). We stayed in Room 32 at the top of the building. That meant dragging our luggage up 4 long flights of stairs. The room was very large with a sitting area and a good size bathroom. The walls were almost too hot to touch and putting on the a/c was so noisy that you couldn't think, let alone sleep. Things didn't cool until well into the night. Our friends stayed one floor lower but had similar problems. Breakfast is in the celler; very nice, but an additional flight of stairs to climb afterwards.
Staff were friendly and helpful but this isn't a place to stay, particularly since there are many other hotels in the street that look better.
Another reviewer was disappointed that this isn't in the Jewish Quarter. We stayed in the (Kasamiertz) Jewish Quarter later in our trip and found it not nearly as interesting as the Old Town. Also, the food choices in the Old Town are much better and less expensive.

Stayed June 2007

“Mixed experience at Mikolaj”

We had been sent here from Hotel Rt Regent as our room at the Regent was not available (for that info see Regent review). The Mikolaj is very central - a stone's throw from the main market square. However, we were in room 14 at the top of a short stair from where we could hear all the noise downstairs in the reception area, dining room, staff areas. In fact there was a staff party after midnight that went on for some time and we had to complain 2 times before it stopped. We ended up with 3 hours sleep. It was 2 days before we saw the manager to register a complaint and we got a reduction in our bill. (We asked to see the manager but had to seek him out ourselves) Having said all this it is a nice hotel and the food reasonable. The young staff are very pleasant and it is sad that they really spoiled things through their thoughtelssness. No-one else in the hotel appeared to be disturbed because their rooms were on higher floors. So it's an ok hotel if you don't mind a bit of noise but you will be ok if you avoid room 14! In fact they really shouldn't really let it as a rooom as it is next door to the staff overnight room/office and an area they use as a conference centre. There was a tourism conference there on during the day while we were there. (Maybe the Mikolaj staff should have gone on the course!) The people we are really annoyed with are the Hotel Rt Regent who sent use there - and we suspect that the Regent frequently double book, make a lame excuse why the room is not available and send guests on to other hotels with no choice in the matter.

  • Liked — Proximity to Main Square
  • Disliked — Placement of room and noise
