The Mikolaj is well placed near the Market Square and next to the Music Academy (which used to be communist party HQ). We stayed in Room 32 at the top of the building. That meant dragging our luggage up 4 long flights of stairs. The room was very large with a sitting area and a good size bathroom. The walls were almost too hot to touch and putting on the a/c was so noisy that you couldn't think, let alone sleep. Things didn't cool until well into the night. Our friends stayed one floor lower but had similar problems. Breakfast is in the celler; very nice, but an additional flight of stairs to climb afterwards.
Staff were friendly and helpful but this isn't a place to stay, particularly since there are many other hotels in the street that look better.
Another reviewer was disappointed that this isn't in the Jewish Quarter. We stayed in the (Kasamiertz) Jewish Quarter later in our trip and found it not nearly as interesting as the Old Town. Also, the food choices in the Old Town are much better and less expensive.
