My partner and I stayed here for 4 nights in November 2011. We had read the reviews before we arrived, and were very disappointed to be given room 11 upon arrival! We asked if the hotel was full and, if it wasn’t, if they would change our room to one with a view of the river. They refused, and said they would only change our room if we paid more. We declined. Room 11 was very small, with a view of the wall opposite and no telephone (apparently as the ‘budget’ room in the hotel, it doesn’t warrant a telephone). The light above the bathroom mirror didn’t work and they were unable to fix it so, luckily, they moved us to a different room- room 7. This room was large and spacious, with fantastic views over the river and the castle.
Although clean and modern, the room was very basic. As previously mentioned, the sheets didnt fit the beds and quilts were very thin. There were no toiletries in the bathroom, and no flannel (which was very annoying as I had forgotten to bring one of my own). Towels were tiny and mismatched, and were not replenished daily. The cleaners seemed to be very stingy with the toilet paper, and would only give one at a time. There were only a few hangers in the wardrobe- no where near enough for us to hang our clothes. There were also no tea and coffee facilities in the room, and the mini bar was locked. Upon asking how we would access the mini bar, we were told by staff that they could give us a key to open it ‘but there wasn’t much point, as there probably isn’t anything in it’…! The corridors in the hotel stank of cabbage/cooking veg the entire time we were there. Very unpleasant. Small things, but they all add up.
Breakfast at the hotel was the biggest letdown. It was supposed to be continental, but it barely qualified as that in my opinion. No croissants, juice was not fresh-more like cheap squash. Bread rolls were ok (no facility to toast). The warm offerings were glutinous scrambled eggs and watery frankenfurters. Vile. Yoghurts/milk for the cereal and coffee were all left out on the table getting warmer and warmer. Horrid. The breakfast is one of the main reasons why I would not recommend this hotel.
The location of the hotel is fantastic (about all that is)- 15 minute walk to the main square and 10 minute walk to the Jewish Quarter (which I would highly recommend. A lot more authentic than the main square, less tourists and some wonderfully kooky bars). A taxi to the main square was 20 zloty (£4) and a taxi to the Jewish Quarter between 10-15 zloty.
We visited Austwich whilst in Krakow- we caught the bus from the bus station and it cost approx £4 each return. Journey time is approx 90 minutes. Buses can be a little cramped and uncomfortable, but the price you pay is so much less than the organised tours. Similary, we also caught the local bus to the salt mines (about £1.50 return I think). Personally, I was quite underwhelmed by the salt mines. They were expensive compared to everything else in Krakow, and apart from the main catherdral which was very impressive, the rest of the tour was a bit dull. If your pushed for time in Krakow, I’d say give the salt mines a miss.
Room Tip: Avoid Room 11!!
