Just returned (13th Nov.2011) from Krakow. Our package rate included 3 nights B/B in the Pod Wawelem plus tour to Auschwitz . On arrival at hotel, were given keys to twin room - not the requested double. Eventually told we could have another room with two singles pushed together and were satisfied to accept this. The room at the back and on the 4th floor was anything but inviting, and not somewhere you might need to relax, given that the hotel has no real lobby. The view was of a brick wall and all furniture and fittings were of a very basic variety (inc.carpet that was both drab and worn) while only one very soft pillow was provided per person, though two more were supplied after a less than enthusiastic response by reception.Unlike some other reviewers, we did not have a safe or fridge. The bathroom with shower and no bath was fine, but provisions were not - one miniscule tablet of soap and tiny bottle of shampoo to serve two people ( no conditioner / shower gel), and a hair dryer only suitable if you have one or two strands of hair! While Wi-Fi was available in the restaurant and at reception, it was not so in the rooms. The one positive here was the provision of a teasmade and bottled water.
Many previous reviewers praised the rooftop restaurant, with its views, as a lovely facility for relaxing. Unfortunately, this is only available during the warm times and was locked, with the result that the only space open for guests to meet, have a coffee or drink, was in the small dark restaurant / bar beside reception where breakfast was served. The breakfast itself, like other meals served there, was adequate. Like most Polish people we met, the restaurant staff were friendly; the reception staff were something of an an exception to this!
While the hotel is located beside one of the main Krakow sights, Wawel Castle, it is at least a 20 minute walk to the Old Town Square. The square, the largest in Europe, is the heart of the city and its buzz centre, and is a real treat, with a number of buildings worth visiting. Small electric tour vehicles are available with commentary in choice of languages. We took one for a tour of the Jewish Quarter and Schindler's factory (now a very good 2nd World War museum). But for us and many others, the visit was overshadowed by our visit (pilgrimage?) to Auschwitz - an essential and utterly moving experience.
Finally, having come from a temperature of +14 degrees C, we hit an east wind dominated -5. For those of a certain vintage, beware!
Room Tip: Not at back. With safe / fridge.
