First impressions were really good, and on reflection the location just couldn't be any better .You are literally 5 or 10 Min's away from all the central attractions, first of all the rooms are basic but very clean, the bathroom was large and modern with clean towels every day, a wee tip here if traveling as a couple insist on a double bed as i overlooked this and we ended up with two singles. ! We also had our room on the opposite side from the nearby Church, which i'm told could be a noise problem, but to be honest we never noticed the bells due to the double glazing installed..! The room itself was quite large with plenty of cupboard space, it also would have been nice to have had some coffee/tea making facilities or even a little fridge but on a lighter note due to the adverse freezing weather it wasn't necessary as i simply put my juice out on the window ledge for 5 Min's...? Enough said..!
I also brought a travel kettle which solved this wee problem, which meant we could have tea/coffee/soup when we wanted...- As for the restaurant well i'm afraid that's where this hotel let's itself down badly, First of all the decor looks and feels like something from the '70s so drab and dreary, and with no heating it was pretty cold especially when the door is continually left open by other inconsiderate guest's, as a result your food gets cold quite quick..The meals in the evening are best described as interesting, we ate in here once and although it was very tasty it got cold very quickly, thus spoiling it.! The prices in here were quite reasonably priced though..!
As for breakfast well what a contrast ! A well stocked selection of cold meats, cereals, yogurts, cooked sausages, eggs, fresh baked bread etc, and as they opened the other section of the restaurant it meant you were away from the draft and kept warm, but all in all this restaurant could do with a serious upgrade..!
In this hotel we found the staff to be very friendly, polite and genuinely helpful, nothing was too much trouble and English was widely spoken. as for excursions you can either book them in the hotel or pop out next door and book , in fact every body's doing tours just shop around it's a buyers market. The staff will also provide you with many maps with directions to get you around, but as you are well within walking distance to the main market square ( 5 Min's ) and if you walk out the door and turn right and right again you will find the bus stop that will take you to the Wieliczka salt mines, keep on walking for a couple of minutes you will see in front of you a very large shopping mall called the GALLERIA It's the biggest in Poland, it has everything trust me..! And from this hotel we walked in minus 20 temperatures down to Schindlers factory museum it took about 35 Min's but worth it as we walked through the Jewish area where Schindlers list was filmed, as for other tours we had booked through another company which took in Auschwitz & Wieliczka salt mine..So anything is possible from the hotel Matejko, which deserves it's 3 * rating just a shame about the restaurant..!
And would i return ? yes of course i would, no worries...!
