Usually for my trips I am a firm believer on TripAdvisor information and reviews. I read the reviews and take in consideration a lot of what my fellow travelers think of a place.
My trip to Sopot was kind of "last minute" in order to visit a friend that lives in Gdansk. The average hotels were already complete and the top ones were too expensive for my budget. After doing some research on location I have decided to do a reservation on Hotel Villa Baltica as the price seemed correct (Around 90 euros a night).
I must say that being my first time in Poland, I was a bit worried of what I was going to get. My worries were soon gone once I first saw the hotel. The hotel is in a very nice typical coastal Polish building about 2 minutes from the beach. You could smell the sea in the air.
Check-in was correct and quick. A nice smiling lady gave me the keys to my room and explained that breakfast would be served until 11:30 - very good as I was in Sopot for a "partying" weekend. The room itself was very clean, with a confortable bed and a LCD TV. The only english channel is CNN. The bathroom was quite small, with a shower and all the basic amenities. Though they were not branded, they were of a reasonable quality. Air-co was working fine and the room was kept cool for the whole weekend - very nice taking into consideration that it was always around 30 degrees celsius during the day.
The breakfast in the following morning was above average - much more than what I was expecting. Many cold options, polish cakes, croissants, a nice coffee and egg on demand. Even though service is far from perfect (no one to explain anything) all the staff would help if demanded.
The hotel is located 3 minutes from the beach, where there is a nice little restaurant that serves delicious and very cheap fried fish. Great place to go late afternoon and chill out on the sea breeze. The walk to the main street of Sopot takes around 10 minutes, but the road is very pleasant and pedestrial only - every 100 meters there was one restaurant.
In a nutshell, that was a very pleasant stay. I believe that the reason that there are so few reviews for Villa Baltica is their big focus on local turists. I did not see ANY foreigner though the hotel seemed full. Of course there are some negative points, like the limited english of the staff or the lack of initiative towards the guest, but this is all compensated by the their professionalim, efficiency and politeness.
Sopot is a great place to visit during the summer and will probably soon become a main turistic destination. My advice is to go as soon as possible before the place loses its character and polish feeling - which is a great thing.
