“Clean, convenient, friendly and cheap. Second stay here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2011

I stayed in this hotel 2 years ago when my choir visited Gdansk, and had very good memories. I wasn't disappointed this time. The newly refurbished breakfast room was a very pleasant addition to the facilities, as was the new lounge. The lack of restaurant and bar is not a problem as there is a very reasonable restaurant within easy walking distance.

The location is close enough to the centre to be able to walk there in about 10 - 15 minutes. From the outside the hotel looks slightly formidable, but once you walk through the doors you enter a pleasant and attractive place. The rooms are very big, with a great bathroom. All rooms also have free wifi - a great addition to 2 years ago!

I would encourage anyone planning to visit Gdansk to stay at the Gryf. The rates are really good, and the staff friendly and helpful. Being within a few hundred yards of the historical shipyard is an experience in itself, and the bus tour of the yards was one of the highlights of the week.

“Basic but good hotel near shipyards”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2010

This hotel is quite basic and not in the center (but still 15-20 minutes walking) but it is very cheap and it's clean and with a good service.
The structure has been refurnished and for the price you pay is excellent.

“Location / Location”

On one hand it's only a 10-15 minute walk from the train station and bus terminal, and it's near the Roads to Freedom exhibition and Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers. On the other hand it's a 20-30 minute walk to the charming historic center's restaurants, sights, and shops.

Right up until you open the door and step inside you'll wonder if you're in the right place. It doesn't look like a hotel from the outside, and up close the signage isn't good. (If you arrive on bus B from the airport you can glimpse their big red sign high on the left as the bus crosses the railway tracks and turns to run down to the train station).

The neighborhood is gritty and working class, but not dangerous. Out after dark you'll see apartment dwellers walking their dog or sneaking a cigarette.

My room (actually a suite) was large, clean, and quiet, with efficient heating and large, operable windows. Staff members varied in experience, but all understood more English than I spoke Polish and tried to accommodate special requests.

“good location for centre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2009

Myself and partner stayed at the Gryf for 3 nights and it is close to the Solidarity monument and square and next to the shipyard. Quite interesting to read and look at the memorial statues etc. It is not in the nicest area but excellent for the centre and train station. The rooms were nice and spacious but no brewing up facilities in room. There were tea and coffee available at a price downstairs in reception. The room had a separate area with sofa and tv and the bathroom was clean and nicely decorated but no complimentary toiletries. The beds were comfortable and extra quilts and pillows were in the room. The staff were pretty helpful and friendly. The hotel does do brekkie but we didnt have it. We chose this hotel because of the price and its location.
We got a taxi from the airport which we bartered for 50 zloty (approx £12). Coming back we found out we could get Bus B opposite the trainstation but it never turned up so again we paid 50 zloty back to airport. There is a taxi area near the bus stop.
If you turn left when you come out of the hotel then cross the road to the right just past the tram stop there is a Road to Freedom museum underground with a tank outside. Further along that road is a piece of the Berlin Wall and the wall that Lech Walensa allegedly climbed over. interesting if your into history. This is also the quickest way into the centre and the train station. It takes about 10-15mins walking. There are regular trams that stop outside the train station.
We took a day trip by train to Gdynnia and Sopot and got a day ticket which wasn't a lot, cant remember how much but worth it. We went to Gdynnia first thinking there was a beach but it was just a ship port and its a bit of a walk from the station. On the way back we stopped at Sopot. Absolutely gorgeous place, one street with shops and bars led to the lovely sandy beach and a huge pier. In the street is 'The Drunken House', a weird and wonderful shaped building. We are thinking of staying in Sopot when the warmer weather appears.
This hotel is not exactly luxurious but it is in an ideal location for sightseeing.

  • Liked — location as close to centre and train station
  • Disliked — not the nicest area and no kettle in room
