“Excellent stay -very good service”

We were a group of 3 couples staying here in July, and we all loved it. Excellent helpful staff ( who speaks English which was very helpful especially when they called taxi for us and the taxi driver did not speak English..). Very good breakfast buffet, and they did not take it away if some were late for breakfast.. They even served scrambled eggs if you were half an hour past breakfast time. There were also two bottles of water for free on the room every day, and we also got water for free in the reception if we asked for it. The rooms were in excellent condition and the bathroom was very nice, though the room we stayed in wasn´t exactly spacious.. Outside the entrance to the reception there are chairs and tables belonging to the Mexican restaurant which is in the basement of Stara Karczma, ( you get a discount there on what you buy when staying at Stara Karczma), and where you can sit and have a beer or two and which we found to be very convinient before going out.. The Pensjonat is located in the Oliwa area, between Gdansk and Sopot which means you probably will have to take a taxi to get around, but that is really not a problem as mentioned above and the fact that taxi is very cheap in Poland. But in Poland you should never take a taxi that has no sign/ phonenumbers showing that it really is a taxi as you could end up getting robbed or paying way too much! All taxis have taxametres.
Gdansk is a beautiful city, and Sopot is great to go out and have fun. Gdynia was a boring city. Nice beaches anywhere along the coast of Gdynia, Sopot and to Gdansk. We did unfortunately not get to experience the beachlife as the sun was hiding most of the time we spent there, but from what we saw of especially Sopot this would be a great place for sunbathing..

“Relax in Gdansk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2008

We stayed at the Stara Karczma in the pleasant suburb of Oliwa. This is not a city centre hotel, but a cvery comfortable pension with spotless rooms. The staff were extremely helpful and polite. Breakfast was buffet style, and there was plenty of choice including a cooked breakfast option.
The hotel is very convenient for the airport and visiting Gydnia and Sopot. Although some way from the centre of Gdansk the city centre can easily be reached by a variety of trams.

  • Liked — Cleanliness and friendly atmosphere
  • Disliked — Some rooms can be a little noisy from traffic.

“Great Hotel in Gdansk...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2007

I stayed at this hotel in August 2006 and was surprised how nice it turned out to be. I am late with my review but wanted to post something after reading the other reviews for this property. The bathroom was spacious and very clean and the room was also a good size as well as very clean. The location is not too bad as it is across from a nice park which was good to walk through on the way to the train station. Gdansk was very crowded in August so I am glad that I did not stay in the heart of the old town. What sparked me to post a review here was the comment that the Mexican restaurant under the hotel was so good. I found the food to be inedible. Maybe the people who ate there do NOT know real Mexican food? It was disgusting and the place was full of flies and insects. It's in a basement so there must be other critters down there. If you appreciate real Mexican food do NOT eat under this hotel. It is awful. The nacho chips were clearly flavored doritos and the guacomole was from a container. If you like 7-11 nachos then dig in! Great Hotel and I would stay here again but would NEVER eat in that restaurant again...

  • Liked — Clean and spacious
  • Disliked — The Mexican restaurant was bad

“Excellent place to stay”

Just returned from Poland having spent the last two nights of the holiday the Stara Karczma. We drove through the car park gates and were very pleasantly suprised to find a pretty court yard. The rooms are decorated in a mexican theme. They are spotless. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is buffet style but eggs and sausages are cooked to order. There is a Mexican restaurant underneath the hotel which is highly recommended. Big portions and you get 10% off as a guest of Stara Karczma. Trains run very regularly to Sopot Gydina and Gdansk city centre.Travelled with son 23 and daughter 20 . We all enjoyed our stay. We booked this hotel through the escape2poland website. If fact we booked the whole of our polish holiday through escape2poland . Piotr was very helpful.

“Good value at Stara Karczma”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2005

Stayed a week in October 2005 at Stara Karczma. Attentive, polite staff and the rooms, en suite, are spotless. Polish buffet style breakfast with good choice of cold meats, cheeses, salads, bread and rolls. In charming area of Oliwa, a quiet suburb of Gdansk, just 10 minutes walk for direct trams to city centre.
