Awful stay at Hotel Balkan. Actually cut our trip short and came home. Room stank of stale cigarette smoke; fleas in the bed; unfriendly staff; creepy ambience and inedible breakfast.

We didn't book this hotel and were put here when the hotel we booked had to close some rooms due to construction. Luckily we were only here one night. The rooms were large, clean and comfortable and breakfast was decent. However, there are no non-smoking rooms in the hotel. Luckily our room didn't smell like smoke. Our biggest complaint was the traffic. All. Night. Long. Even with the windows shut you couldn't get rid of the sound. And it wasn't the gentle drone of ongoing cars, it was crazy sounds like the revving of street racing. I kept waiting to hear the metallic crunch of a crash. Needless to say, we were glad to get out of there and into our much quieter original hotel.

A really dissapointing experience. We spent there a week a big group of friends and were badly treated by most ot the personnel, except the night receptionist who was lovely. The rest were helpless, we complained about not having the rooms cleaned nor the rooms made, and were almost laughed at our faces by their answers.
Moreover, smoking is allowed in the whole hotel and you can smell it. Very noisy, in addition, and I had to pay 30 euro to get my room open because I had forgotten the key inside!!! really incredible.
in the end, I asked for a claim form to complain and I was given none.

My stay was actually November 1995. Today I discovered an old invoice from the Hotel name on it, so decided to see what others have said about this terrible place. We sent some faxes and were charged an incredible fee. Each page was sent as a separate message and at the slowest possible speed. Urgent inward international phone calls were never transferred to our room. Urgent inward faxes were not delivered to the room. The reception desk attitude was terrible. The Manager came racing through the entrance foyer with a small broom and was thrashing a maid's behind and screaming abuse at her. It was like wev were in a foreign language version of Fawlty Towers. This place is way to hell out of the way and is a long walk from the nearest public transport.
