We're American and while on a long uk holiday visiting family we decided to go to Prague for a few days at the end of the trip. I tortured myself researching hotels- which was the best value? Where was the best location, etc. if you're doing the same stop now & book the Astoria. You won't regret it- here's why.
GETTING THERE- I read a lot about unscrupulous taxi services so I booked a car through the hotel. DON'T bother doing this- after an hour of waiting, our driver never showed, and we took an AAA Taxi from the airport to the hotel (20 min ride at most, cost around $30 for the 3 of us & driver was great- you also get a ride back to the airport with them for about half off, they were at the hotel when requested & it was fine & easy.
THE HOTEL- we paid less than $100 US a night for a double room. It was clean and comfortable with access to a balcony from the room, which had a nice view from the 6th floor. It also had a desk with a wlan internt connection, and a safe, as well as a closet. Our double was 2 singles pushed together with 2 duvets, but it was comfortable with soft sheets, and we slept soundly. There was plenty of space to snuggle! There was a church tower outside our window & with the windows & balcony door closed you couldn't hear a thing.
The bathroom had a shower with excellent water pressure, and plenty of hot water and a very clean tub which I happily took a long soak in. It's a high step getting in & out, so beware of that if you have mobility issues. Everything was spotless and comfortable & we were very pleased.
The lobby was comfortable, there's wifi, and smoking is allowed on the right side of the lobby. If you're a vehement anti-smoking person, choose another city. This is common here.
Breakfast was from 7-10 and had a large offering of hot & cold options as well as an espresso machine & hot milk. There are no tea/coffee facilities in the room, which I understand is the norm in the CZ.
LOCATION!
5 minutes walk down some lovely streets and you're in the old town square, with the adtronomical clocks (and excellent Xmas markets when we were there). Another 5-10 minutes and you're at the Charles Bridge. We were thrilled with the location & walked everywhere.
OVERALL this hotel was comfortable, very clean, great value for the money and in a perfect location. Would stay here again without hesitation. I'm an American who considers camping to be a 2* hotel, if this gives you any indication of my standards.
A FEW THOUGHTS ON PRAGUE
Gorgeous. Beyond gorgeous. People are very friendly and the local food is tasty. I read a lot about the dangers of being robbed or pick pocketed and was very nervous, but relaxed immediately once there. Maybe the people who wrote about this have never been to a city, but it's no worse than Madrid, London, Dublin Boston or Paris, and I felt considerably safer than I do when in New York.
Try and go to Kutna Hora if you can, but we were disappointed with the tour the hotel suggested (yellow brochure w lots of tours)- the guide was excellent but we only had ten minutes in the ossuary at Sedlec, and would have liked 20 more minutes there- it was the reason we went!
Skip Wenceslas square or save it for last- the old town, Charles Bridge, Castle area & Jewish quarter are much better if you've got limited time!
Hope you enjoy your trip/stay as much as we did!

It was particularly pleasing to see that your impression of our staff and most of our service was good. Please accept my personal apology for the inconvenience with the airport pick up. There were some problems with the car on the way to the airport. However our limousine service is realiable and we have never had any negative reviews up to now. I am really very sorry about that. Anyway feedback is always important to us.
