“You get what you pay for”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2009

I got this hotel through one of the online services that does not reveal the hotel until you pay. According to their rating this was a four star hotel along the lines of Hilton....etc. I would have not called this a hotel but rather a B/B. It is in a residendial neighborhood at the apex of a turn where Czech citizens like to test their driving skills with no air conditioning and no curtains it took a couple of days to get use to the traffic noise.
The rooms, even though out dated where large but there were no chairs to sit on to use my laptop and after the 2nd day my internet acess was restricted. The tv were old an limited to four channels. There were no phones, coffee pot or curtains. The bathroom had a large window above the curtainless bath tub that face the neighboring house. At night we had to take our baths in the dark and as most of you fellow travelers know that the windows have no screens and insects were more than happy to get out of the cold. They did have a bidet, cool.
Breakfast at the restaurant was surreal. On our first day there were four other group of people but I knew we were going to go down to three shortly. When 3 guys were talking on the phone in broken english about refunds. I know I should be grateful about any meal but the breakfast items were not replenished and I felt relieve, guilty and gluttoneous when other parties came late for breakfast. At least I got to eat. My wife who is vegetarian enjoyed the bread, coffe and juice. I enjoyed the limited cold cuts and the potted meat which I have not eaten since my imporvished youth.
The vista from our room was nice since we were on a hill we could see across the river into old town and we could walk through the adjoining park and take a funacal down into the river and walk across the bridge into old town square. The park also led to about half the tourist sites including Prague Castle. It is a hike but mostly down hill and in September the weather was just right.
I am always looking for the best bang for my buck and Hotel Vanicek was one of the better deals but after staying there I wished that I had spent more money to have a better facility. Transportation to get back to the hotel was good but as tired as we were, we would press on with sight seein because the thought of going back to the hotel to relax was unavailable and unapealing.

“Terrible, Horrible!!”

This hotel is extremely over-rated. My rating of this hotel is negative, negative, star-1. When we arrived, only one man was there to check us in. No one else was around, which was very odd. But we went ahead and stayed because we found it more difficult to look for a replacement hotel. We decided to join a couple of packaged tours. When we arrived from our tour, the hotel was very dark. We have to scramble on the walls to search for the light switch to turn on the lights. Even the surrounding of the hotel is dark too. So walking around in the area can be dangerous. They also listed available amenities on this hotel: shuttle service, high speed internet, restaurant. NONE of these exists!! The breakfast was bad too, they served us days old salami! The worst was there was NO HOT WATER!! We also had to arrange for our own transportation to be picked up. We never saw the man who checked us in. No one else was in the hotel except this one non-English speaking lady who only goes to the hotel during the day to probably clean. Very, very bad service. Very, very bad hotel.. Will never, ever recommend this hotel to anyone.

“Did not like.”

This place is clean and cheap but I would never stay here again. We arrived in Prague at about 6:30 a.m. and were told we could drop our luggage at reception and come back at 2pm to check in. When we got there, no one answered the door and it was freezing out, so we sat in front with our luggage. Luckily the woman who serves breakfast happened to show up around 7:30 and let us in. After this, we walked around for about 7 hours trying to kill time. Once we came back to check in (it's a long uphill walk from the city to this hotel) there was still no one to check us in. We called and finally someone came about 1/2 hour later. The room was ok, kind of small and no shower curtain. That night we decided to book a different room at Prague Centre Apartments for a few crowns more and that place was a PALACE in comparison, plus was actually in town. I would not feel safe walking through Kinsky Garden late at night to the Hotel Vanicek. Might be a good place for old folks and families w/ small children, but not for anyone looking to explore Prague and actually go out at night. Bad.

“Pleasant Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2007

A nice little hotel but as other reviews have said it is a little out of the way. Buses are frequent so this is not so much of a problem. Otherwise it is about a 20-25 minute stroll through Kinsky Garden which is very pleasant but can be hard work as there are some very steep areas.

Staff were polite and very helpful and all the reception staff I encountered spoke excellent English. The hotel is very clean and the room was a reasonable size. Only real complaint was that there was no shower curtain which led to the bathroom floor getting very wet.

“good value hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2006

A very resonably priced hotel but rather too far from the city to walk. Surounding roads rather steep. Breakfast was fair but the staff are friendly and helpful.

Forget the taxi's as most of them are dishonest. The hotel is well served by an excellent bus service which links to the metro. Buy a day pass.

The city is lovelly, but eat and drink off the main drag if you want quality and value for money.
