I got this hotel through one of the online services that does not reveal the hotel until you pay. According to their rating this was a four star hotel along the lines of Hilton....etc. I would have not called this a hotel but rather a B/B. It is in a residendial neighborhood at the apex of a turn where Czech citizens like to test their driving skills with no air conditioning and no curtains it took a couple of days to get use to the traffic noise.
The rooms, even though out dated where large but there were no chairs to sit on to use my laptop and after the 2nd day my internet acess was restricted. The tv were old an limited to four channels. There were no phones, coffee pot or curtains. The bathroom had a large window above the curtainless bath tub that face the neighboring house. At night we had to take our baths in the dark and as most of you fellow travelers know that the windows have no screens and insects were more than happy to get out of the cold. They did have a bidet, cool.
Breakfast at the restaurant was surreal. On our first day there were four other group of people but I knew we were going to go down to three shortly. When 3 guys were talking on the phone in broken english about refunds. I know I should be grateful about any meal but the breakfast items were not replenished and I felt relieve, guilty and gluttoneous when other parties came late for breakfast. At least I got to eat. My wife who is vegetarian enjoyed the bread, coffe and juice. I enjoyed the limited cold cuts and the potted meat which I have not eaten since my imporvished youth.
The vista from our room was nice since we were on a hill we could see across the river into old town and we could walk through the adjoining park and take a funacal down into the river and walk across the bridge into old town square. The park also led to about half the tourist sites including Prague Castle. It is a hike but mostly down hill and in September the weather was just right.
I am always looking for the best bang for my buck and Hotel Vanicek was one of the better deals but after staying there I wished that I had spent more money to have a better facility. Transportation to get back to the hotel was good but as tired as we were, we would press on with sight seein because the thought of going back to the hotel to relax was unavailable and unapealing.
