We stayed at The Charles Hotel, Prague between 17 and 19th December 2011. This was our second visit to the hotel. We re-booked as we enjoyed our first stay, loved the accommodation and the location was perfect for us.
When we booked into the hotel we were again delighted with the room we were given. We unpacked and spent the rest of the day sightseeing. The following morning a member of staff came to our room after breakfast and informed us in poor English that there was a problem with the room he needed to fix. We were getting ready to go out, so he said he would return in 10 minutes. We then left the hotel and spent the day sightseeing.
On our return that evening we were stopped at reception and told we could not go to our room. We were informed there was a problem with our room and so all our belongings had been moved to another room. Our key was taken and exchanged for the new room key.
We had been moved to a greatly inferior room, much smaller with a tiny bathroom. The view was no longer of Prague streets but of a wall. If this was not bad enough we then found a number of our possessions were missing, including -
• the contents of the room safe (our money, valuables and passports)
• all my wife’s underwear
• my wife’s medications which she must take daily
• items we had placed in the room fridge
When we asked to go back to the room we were repeatedly refused the key. The staff were unhelpful, dismissive and uncaring. It was made quite clear to us that they had no intention of letting us back into our original room.
I was eventually allowed access to the room after some time only by refusing to leave reception until I had my possessions.
When I entered our original room I found there was no problem with it, rather, it had been given to other guests. They were out and I had to search amongst their possessions to retrieve ours.
We demanded to speak to the manager about our disgraceful treatment. We were informed the manager would be available the next morning. He did not arrive and so we had a member of staff telephone him. The manager refused to come to the hotel to speak to us. We were charged the same full rate for our second small room as we were for our original room.
I cannot imagine a worse way to treat guests than to both violate their privacy and then refuse them access to their own possessions. My wife was extremely upset to have to argue with staff to regain her own underwear. We will never return to this hotel and intend to post this review on as many travel sites as we can find.
I would strongly advise anyone not to stay at this hotel.
