“cheap beer”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2007

Hotel rooms were average. Beds were comfortable and rooms were clean. understanding that you are in Europe. Desk staff was not very friendly, they need to understand that we are not slowing down their day to day business we "are" their business. The food in the restaurant was not impressive by any standards, the breakfast was almost not edible. You had the basic cold meats and cheeses. Pretty hard to mess that one up but the scrambled eggs were like water and the breads were not at all fresh. The location of the hotel is nice, close to the town square but not to close, a short, safe 10 minute walk. The town is known for it's budweis beer, the first bud beer brewery, no bud light in this town. The beers were on average 60 cdn cents per .5 liter mug. Not bad for some great tasting beer. There is also alittle mall one block up from the hotel with a small pharmacy and grocery store along with botique shops. Seemed to be a safe city to walk in but streets do get dark and quiet at night, a friend to walk with is probably not a bad idea. There is also a sports bar 50 feet from the hotel a nice place to have a night cap and the service was good, they were very appreciative of our tips, which is rare in most cities I have been to. They even walk away without even waiting for a tip but once they get it the 60 cent beers keep on coming.

“Best hotel in Ceske Budejovice,I have stayed there 3 times in 3 years”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2007

I have stayed at Hotel Gomel 3 times in the last 3 years and have had excellent service. This hotel serves real Czech food and it is best I have had in all the resturants in Ceske Budejovice. The management is there for your every need. The staff is excellent and very polite and helpful. I don't know which hotel the other person stayed in but it was not the Hotel Gomel I know and love. I go back every year and I would never stay at another hotel.

“Disappointing food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 December 2005

Despite the boast of several good restaurants, most of the menus were the same and the quality of the food was low - tough chicken, tough and reheated duck, even tough salmon, frozen vegetables badly cooked. One evening when the hotel was catering for a massive function, we were told there was nowehere for us to eat, although we did find a place.

One morning for breakfast all 24 seats for the hundreds of guests, we had nowhere to sit, so went to take our breakfast into one of the restaurants where the doors were open - we were refused entrance and when we said we just wanted somewhere to sit for brekfast, the reply was just a shrug. Not that the breakfast was all worth eating anyway.

The room was stiffling hot with no means of controlling the temperature - when we asked we were told the heating would be switched off at 10 PM. It wasn't.

The view was disappointing.

There was a nasty glass shelf in the bathroom over the sink - ideally positioned for bumping ones head in the morning!

The souvenire shop brightly lit near reception, privately run, was never manned: a shame because the prices looked reasonable
