For the most part the hotel was nice. The suite was clean and roomy. There were a couple of minor issues with it. First, there was no exhaust fan in the bathroom and after any shower or bath, the whole suite got a bit steamy. Second, there was no towel bar or rack so trying to dry a towel for later reuse was impossible when hanging it on the door hook, given the general humidity in the bathroom from the lack of exhaust fan.
As for amenities, there's an Outback Steakhouse which is like every other Outback Steakhouse. The service was very good, even though we came in for a full dinner about 15 minutes before closing.
The breakfast buffet has "cook to order" eggs and you can even get an egg white omelet with your choice of fillings. The other items on the buffet were all good. Go early, though. Around 9am you might be looking for an empty table and also at a good 45 minutes from start to finish.
There's a casino in the hotel lobby. They have many slot machines, two roulette wheels and three blackjack tables. The dealers, for the most part, were nice. Some, however, almost seemed to be on the side of the house. For example, they were never apologetic for taking six cards and making a 21 to beat your 20. Every other casino I've been to the dealers seem to want you to win and it just didn't feel that way there. No big deal, though. I still managed to pull a couple hundred dollars from the blackjack tables during my stay. The casino has only been opened for a few months, so maybe they'll iron out any kinks. Also, everything requires approval from the pit boss. Asking the dealer to change a $5 chip into singles for a "propina" has to be approved by the pit boss and can take a couple of minutes. Like I said, though, maybe just growing pains.
Lastly, Dragonfly Adventures has a kiosk in the lobby to book your excursions and tours. The tours themselves were great, but the information we got from Dragonfly prior to going was horrible. We did the El Yunque trip and the bioluminescent bay kayak trip.
First, the El Yunque trip had a spot where you could wade under a waterfall. Obviously, you were going to get soaking wet. Nothing was mentioned about this at the Dragonfly desk and we felt left out when everyone was splashing around in bathing suits they were apparently informed to bring along and having a good time while we stood there without a change of clothes watching them.
Second, the we were told on the kayak trip we might get splashed a little. I've kayaked before both with and without a skirt in a river kayak and generally you do only get splashed a little. These kayaks, however, were open top ocean kayaks. I don't have a problem at all with getting wet kayaking. And in fact, there were shower facilities at the take-out point for the explicit purpose of washing off the salt water and putting on some dry clothes. My problem was that Dragonfly made no mention of this at all and we had to ride 90 minutes back to the Embassy Suites with "dinghy butt".
The final thing is not a knock on Dragonfly at all, but most of the fun stuff is east of the Embassy Suites, so you are first on the van and last one off and you spend as much as or more time driving compared to the actual excursion. You do get to experience more of the fabulous Puerto Rican drivers than the other guests, though. (If you've never been, they are all crazy.)
If I go back to Puerto Rico, I'd consider staying here again although two free nights from HHonors was a big factor. Dragonfly does some nice trips, but I will always bring a bathing suit and a change of dry clothes wherever we go - even on the Bacardi tour :)
