We stayed here in February 2012 on the club level. Form the moment we checked in to the moment we check out, we were treated as treasured guest. Each request was met with "My Pleasure."
The grounds of the hotel are spotless, well manicured and continously cleaned. We played tennis and took tennis lessons - our pro Kamil was very thorough and our group clinic for 1.5 hours in the mid days sun was exhausting - and left us all sweating and smiling..
I had a deep tissue massage in the spa - simply wonderful. The spa is a bit small, with just a ladies and gents locker room and a shared whirlpool and finnish sauna. Not a lot of relaxation space. Exercise space was adequate with tredmill, elliptical, bike and universal. I did not take any of the classes - it appeared there were two per day.
We sat at the pool, and sat at the beach, no problem having the pool staff find and set up loungers and umbrellas. We ordered drinks and light snacks from the pool waiters as well as ordered ourselves from the bar. The pool waiters were a little slow, and we had to hunt them down (after waiting quite a long time) to close our tab. The service in the bar from Robert and Elmer was exceptional.
We frequented the club lounge for a light breakfast, mid day snack and pre-dinner drinks. The staff was incredibly accomodating, mixing any cocktail, including tasty mojitos. Wine, champagne, cappucino, tea, soda and water were available through out the day. Well worth the upgrade.
We had a cooked to order breakfast each day in the cafe. Service was good, but the room is all tile and glass, and quite noisy. For some reason - there was always lots of breakage each day, dishes and glasses breaking and smashing on the tile floor.
The casino was quite fun - much lower minimums at tables than I have seen at other upscale resorts. Saturday table minimum bet was $2. Not too crowded, the usual slot hogs in place.
We had a memorable meal at Il Mulino. Expert waitstaff and an Outstanding captain (Steven). WE enjoyed the welcome treats as well as the strawberry grapa that concluded our evening. My only complaint was the incredible markup on the wine - 5x retail?? I think we were one of the only tables with a bottle. They'd sell more if the markup were more reasonable, and the list expanded more than just the "well know" wines. Time to add some QPR gems to the list.
The location is close to the airport, but there is no overwhelming noise. A cab ride from the airport was about $15, which included some charge for luggage.
It is a $21 cab ride into Old El San Juan. THe taxi's are almost all very large vans than can easily accomodate 6.
One small complaint was the timing of the room cleaning. Service was provided twice a day - in the "morning" and then again around 5 PM. Everyday - our room was not serviced until 2 PM or LATER. So we would come back to the room - still dirty. No clean towels. I Don't understand why the rooms, particularly on the club level couln't be serviced by 12:30. But honestly, it was a small inconvenience for an outstanding visit.
Excellent visit - I will return.
Room Tip: Club level - ocean view.
