I went to this resort, after reading the reviews, with high hopes and guarded expectations. Maybe that is why I had such an awesome time!! I was there with my husband and two adult children. Yes the accommodations are rustic. And mostly explained already here. But our room was just like the picture on their website. It was very warm and cozy. I took flannel PJ's because of the previous reviews that I had read, but only used them one night. Most of the time we kept the ceiling fan on to push the warm air down. We were very comfortable. The food in the restaurant was exceptional!!! All our food there was top notch. Our waitresses were very helpful and soooo very nice and kind. I found we had everything we needed or requested. The place was booked, so I am thinking they were fairly busy and all our needs were met. I can't say enough about the hot springs, yes the dressing facilities are a little dated and small, but gezz, how many times is this Tennessee gal going to get in 165 degree water with the air temp at -10. One for the "Life list"!!! The water at some places is too hot to stay put there. Wonderfully relaxing!! This is the true Alaskan Wilderness you know, not the Taj Mahal!!!! The Aurora was another "Life list" thing. Truly almost a religious experience!!! The "naked eye" view is different from the "camera" view of the pics that you see. They are almost ghostly, rather than the vivid greens and reds of pictures, but still very beautiful!!! My daughter set her camera for the aurora pics and left it set and got some really good ones in my opinion. The forecast for the aurora while we were there was moderate, so I am guessing you would see different things if the forecast were calm or extreme. But for me it was definitely worth the trip. And I didn't get to go on the snow-cat tour. But my husband and Children did. But the staff gave us a wake-up call and I did get to see them :) It is amazing what they are trying to accomplish with the geothermal energy. A truly different concept. That tour was very informative. The Ice Museum is a work of art in itself. One of the sculptors was there working when we took our tour and that was a treat to get to watch her do her trade. And yes, it was warmer inside the Ice Museum than it was outside. Knowing all the hours it takes to accomplish what they have here makes it more enjoyable!! And to one of my favorite parts!!! The Kennel tour and Dogsled ride!!! WOW!! The girls there are so informative. We were there on the day that the Yukon Quest tour started. The young lady that talked with us was so passionate about her dogs and her knowledge of the Quest and the Iditarod was just inspiring. She brought several of the dogs inside to visit with us. My favorite was Haggard. They were energetic, but at the same time so loving. One, whose name I forget, was just a little speed demon. He wasn't hooked to the sled, but was seemingly running circles around us. Simply wide open throttle. The young lady who was our musher, gave us a mini lesson as we wore along thru snow covered trails. Soooo beautiful!! The ride was around 15 min or so, but I loved every min. My son made a video as we went along and you can hear my daughter and myself laughing almost all the way. Just one more for the "life list"!!!! We went across a frozen lake which was prettier than a picture. Made me wish I could take the dogs and just go forever in the stillness. In my opinion this trip was truly worth the money and the time. We were on a plane for over 8 hours to get there, so that was the only down thing about the trip. Yes, the resort could use a little updating, but I wouldn't want to take away all the "wilderness" feel. I would go back if given the chance.
