This place has a lot to offer--sweeping views from the private balconies in the back, lovely gardens and lounges, a great breakfast buffet, very helpful staff, free parking, a great location, and prices that made our jaws drop. I'll acknowledge, as others have, that the hotel could use some updating and freshening up. However, I won't spend much time on that issue, as I think the advantages of this place far outweigh the lack of up-to-the-minute decor. I also agree with other reviews--the older feel of this "grand dame" of a hotel will remind you of a bygone era. There is something very Hemingway-esque about this hotel, and indeed, Papa H. loved Ronda dearly.
As for the view and the private balconies--this alone was worth staying here. See the picture I've posted of the sunset from our balcony and you'll see what I mean. Not only does it overlook the hills, but also offers a great view of the beautiful and elegant hotel grounds.
Our room was spic and span, and was absolutely enormous. (Although we chatted with another couple at breakfast, and it seems that not all the rooms were as big as ours.) The beds were a little uncomfortable, but this was kind of typical everywhere we went in Spain and Portugal.
This place had the best breakfast among the 7 hotels we stayed in during our 2 week trip. A bit on the pricey side if you're paying out of pocket, but somehow, we managed to get a rate that included the very nice breakfast buffet. During our whole trip, we didn't see another buffet that included eggs, sausage, bacon, churros, various deli meats & cheeses, cereal, a variety of breads, rolls and pastries, as well as cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, coffee (espresso)f and juices. We saw buffets at other hotels that were a fraction of the size and quality that were almost the same price.
The hotel is in close proximity to many of the sites in Ronda--just a 10-15 minute "straight shot" walk down a single street past a lovely cliffside park, then on to the bull ring, restaurants and shops, main square, Puente Nueva bridge and the old town. The way is well-lit, and felt safe even at night. It's just enough of a walk to get your blood pumping in the morning or walk off dinner in the evening, without making you too tired.
The Reina Victoria has ample free parking right outside the front door of the hotel. We took a few day trips out into the hills, and never had any issues getting a good spot when we returned (no matter the hour).
We liked this place so much that we actually extended our stay an extra night. As we were making these plans, we realized that we should also go ahead and make our Alhambra reservation. It turns out we had waited a little too long (even in the off-season) and there were limited quantities of affordable tickets remaining. Long story short, the main manager of the hotel helped us sort this out for a full 45 minutes. He turned his computer and phone over to us, and when our limited Spanish got in the way of getting things done, he got on the phone with the Alhambra people *and* the management at our next hotel. These folks go the extra mile.
Oh, and one final word...and I left this until the end on purpose...given all that you've read above, you might be surprised that the off season price for this place was just 60 euros/night, and for us, that also included breakfast. In light of all of this, I seriously recommend this place.
