“Basic but clean with a great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2010

We were staying the night in Ronda and had no reason to spend a lot of time in a hotel, far too many interesting historical sights and great views to see in Ronda, a beautiful place to visit hence we had no desire to spend a lot of money on a room. £45 later and having scanned Lonely Planet who stated The Colon had "sparkling " bathroom facilities we were there. We had a room on the top floor with a large terrace overlooking the church, i think it goes without saying that if you are near a church in Spain there will be bells ringing at some point, unlike the UK church bells are used and are not just for decoration. However i didn't notice it overnight only at 7am when i got rocked out of my bed. The room itself was basic but clean. large enough and the bed was clean and comfortable, the bathroom was indeed "sparkling" and since the bullring was a 7/8 minute walk from the hotel i think the location was fantastic. Unlike some of the other hotels this one doesn't have parking available, we parked our vehicle near the supermarket to the North and just walked the 5 minutes to the hotel. The hotel is near the train station and again it is only a short walk. There are a whole price range of hotels available in Ronda but for cheap, very importantly clean and a great location with nice staff - if you speak a bit of Spanish - this hotel was ideal for our needs and i would recomend it.

“Good location, bad bed”

We stayed here one night in a room on the first floor. we were looking for a inexpensive room in the city center. the price was 45 euros for a double room. the room was very clean but the bed was hard and the traffic was very loud. I couldn't get any sleep.
If you have to stay here get one of the rooms on the top floor.

“The Bells, The Bells!”

This is actually a decent, and very economical place, providing you do not go expecting anything more than basic, clean, decent accomodation. I am not sure what in Spain distinguishes a hotel from a hostal, but this was more like my idea of a hostal: a good bed for the night, without many trimmings. However, it was a very good rate, and I would happily stay there again.

It's a hotel of about 10 rooms above a cafe: the picture on their website gives a pretty good idea. It's close to the centre of the town, so no problems about location. We were travelling by train and it was close enough to the station. As you would expect with an establishment like this they don't have their own parking, and I didn't investigate where you could leave a car.

It's worth paying the 3 Euros extra for one of the top floor rooms with a roof terrace. The owners are very friendly and helpful, but little or no English is spoken: I think you have to speak at least phrasebook Spanish here.

A few extra bits of care and attention would move this from an o.k. place to a good one. For example it would be nice to have a plug for the bathroom sink! But these were minor gripes.

I would happily stay there again. However, there is one thing you do need to be warned about. It's not a hotel to stay in if you like partying all evening and rising late. In our room at least the air-conditioning was effective, but very noisy. So we preferred to turn it off and sleep with the french windows open onto the terrace. That was fine - you don't really need the air-conditioning at night, at least in September, however you do then get quite a lot of noise from the street. But that's not all: the Lonely Planet guide which recommended this hotel did say that the terraces give a good view of the church across the street - it would be more appropriate to say that they are in earshot of the church. It's not a problem at night when the church bells are muffled, they should not disturb anyone other than the lightest sleeper. However, there is no need to bring an alarm clock if you are staying here, as you would have to be stone-deaf not to be wakened first thing in the morning.

This is an o.k. place, and I would have no reservations about staying there again (although next time I'd pack my ear-plugs), but if I were going to Ronda again I'd probably think of this as one of the possible places to stay rather than it being on my list of 'must stay there again places'.
