“I love Jim, the owner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2011

Pelican is not an all-inclusive luxurious hotel, but such a homy place. Jim, the owner, is such a great and fun person and we spend lot of free time just chatting with him. You do not get everyday cleaning or special service, but Jim is there to help you. He treated the guests like his friends and we all had such a good time. This place is for someone who like quiet, simple, and mellow stay,

“Local Fun!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2010

We stayed at Jim's place for a week in easter with 5 teens. Jim is a great personable guy. When researching this place amongst locals in Rincon area before our booking, everyone had favorable things to say about Jim. Before and during our stay, anytime we couldn't get ahold of Jim was due to unrelieble Cell service in the area. If needed, Jim was easy to find or get ahold of. Although his place is not the Hilton, it was clean, quiet, SAFE and comfortable. And yeah...it did lack basic kitchen dishes. The only complaint we had is that things like disheware, a little dust here and there were in our opinion, a lack of a woman's touch. ;-p If you want the "Local" experience, this is the place to stay. And with that said, respect the locals! They will help you with anything!!! The neighborhood is a mix of locals and 2nd homes. Even the town drunks were polite and hospitible. You are in walking distance to a few nice bars and Puntas bakery. A minutes drive to transport your boards to the beach! In fact, this house is in the Puntas barrio. At times water gets slowed down to the area as the larger towns hog the flow. So being "local", you need to pay attention to the neighbors and know when to rely on the water tanks on the roof. Another fact, Jim rushed home to tell us one day the water was cut off from the city and we needed to rely on the tank. NEVER with all of us in the house, did we ever run out of water! Jim always made sure to check on us daily and at the end of the night if we were awake. Always had fresh towels and linen handy and the pool area was always clean. I would definately recommend this place and would definately stay again. But remember, this is if you want the Local experience and not the Hilton!!!

“The Pelican is So So”

To Start, the owner of the Inn, Jim Behr, is cool. He made himself available at a really odd hour to ensure that we found the place. It is tucked in the hills amongst some homes and other Inns and Villas. We got there at like 3 in the morning and he lead us straight to bed. That was nice no paperwork or anything to deal with. In fact I simply paid with a credit card over the phone and there were NO hidden charges. He is a super nice guy. All be it sometimes hard to get a hold of. You can call but often you are left leaving a message and hoping he calls you back. We stayed in a small 2 bedroom apartment type which only lacked a full kitchen which was fine because after the good rates we could afford to eat out for our meals. The apartment accomidated 4 of us for only $401 after tax for 3 nights. No extra charges for extra people either. We had a fridge and microwave and even some plastic ware for eating. I loved how each room had its own AC because it got pretty hot. The apartment was clean for the most part. The shelving in the bathroom didn't look very clean. It just needed a bit of deep cleaning and the rugs on the floors had alot of stains which wasn't very appealing. On the morning of the 2nd day of our stay there was no water in our little apartment. That meant no showers or washing of hands. We couldn't even flush the toilet. This posed a problem when you wake up and the only thing you want to do is go to the restroom. I called Jim and didn't hear anything back. We finally just left and held it until we arrived at a place with a restroom. That was a bit inconvenient. Luckly we had family staying at a different hotel and they were nice enough to let us use theirs for the rest of that day. When we returned later on that night the water was working but we still hadn't heard from Jim. We were to leave the next morning early and just left the key in the room. I never did hear anything back from Jim about the water or how our stay was. I guess he assumed everything was ok. In the future I will try to dig a bit deeper and make sure the place is big enough to at least have a staff on hand if something goes wrong.

  • Liked — The owner seemed to be nice and booking was way easy.
  • Disliked — The lack of communication when something goes wrong.
