“Be Careful Which Room You Book”

First, when we arrived at this hotel, we did not find the name "Parador" anywhere. The sign just said "Villa Antonio" so it was a little confusing in finding it. I have never written a review for any place that we stayed, but felt that I should for this hotel so that others would not have the same disappointing experience that we had on our vacation. My husband and I booked five nights at this hotel in February. We were not expecting anything fancy, but the room that we were given left a lot to be desired. We were provided with a room on the second floor of a two-story building in what the repeat hotel guests called "The Cell Block". It appeared that many of the guests came back year after year. They were very friendly and helpful about the hotel, and the area in general. The room was advertised as a one bedroom apartment. As soon as we walked into the "apartment", we knew that we made a mistake. The room was very small, plain and old. Although, we usually don't worry too much about the room as long as it is clean and nicely appointed since we don't spend much time in a room, it was a bit claustrophobic. Guests should also not expect much in the way of amenities in these rooms. The kitchen was on what was once a screened in porch. The kitchen cabinets were old, and in disrepair. There were two plates, two cups, and a few utensils in the kitchen. The room was air conditioned with a window unit that stuck out in the "kitchen" so that the hot air was blowing on you when you were in that "room". We went to the office, and explained that we were not happy with our room. I have to say that the hotel office staff could not have been any nicer about the situation. I expect that we were not the first to have this issue. We had to pay for the room for one night, and they said that we could cancel our reservation for the remainder of the week. They offered us a two bedroom apartment which was in the back of the resort or a suite at the same price that we paid. We took the suite which was very basic, but much nicer It also had a very nice view of the ocean, and a wonderful porch to sit out on to eat or relax while watching the surf. The suite was only available for that night. so we booked the hotel next door, and moved the next morning. The beach in this area is nice, but very narrow, and was really washed away in front of the hotel. The sunsets at this location are awesome!

“great if you are going for a week...apartments sleeping 3 for $130 a night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2009

for one or two nights it seemed too expensive and not as nice as Rincon of the Seas...yet if you want to stay longer they have rooms with kitchens which is great...the AC worked great...has a great playground for kids, nice pool, steps from the beach, internet access and right next door you can rent kayaks and jet skies...

“Found a new family here.....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2008

We wanted to stay in Puerto Rico for a few days after a cruise and chose the closest place on the Caribbean coast, Rincon. Thanks to Trip Advisor, Villa Antonio sounded like just what we wanted, and we were not disappointed. The very first day, after a 2 1/2 hr drive from San Juan, we went to the pool and asked some folks basking in the sun there for a nearby grocery. Soon we found ourselves with a new family of friends, going to one unit for ice cream social, to the deck over the ocean for "sunset toasting", and to a great potluck and cocktail party hosted by the owner.

These folks have been coming to Villa Antonio, some for over 40 years. Everyone, including staff and owner, were friendly, helpful and charming. The Parador is older, but very clean, and fully outfitted if we had wanted to cook. The ocean was a step away, and the grounds were lovely.

Bad points? Well, not anyone's fault that the normally flat ocean in front of the hotel was affected by heavy storms in the U.S. and was almost unswimmable, until you got outside the surf line. The folks there recommended a public beach a few miles south and it was protected, deserted and wonderful. The hotel pool was a bit chilly, but then, it was winter.

Everything was great, from a coin laundry on site to wireless internet. We would love to go back again someday, despite the REALLY long trip from Oregon.

“The place is solely for the locals!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2007

I have been visiting this part of the Island since childhood.
It had been 12yrs since my last visit. Wow...how things change!

We stayed at the Villa Antonio Beach front cottage #5...
roll out of bed and on to the beach. That was what we paid for
and nothing else.

This place is primarily a vacation destination for the locals who
visit from various parts of the island. They know the drill and
come fully stocked with beer and loud music!

Don't be fooled by the online photos.

Where do i begin...entering the gates you soon get a feel for
how the rest of the stay is going to proceed...the staff is friendly
and helpful, however that is where it ends.

The room was "depressing" the furniture was old and dingy.
everthing from the curtains, bedding, toilet seat, appliances, cutlery , eating table and chairs were just gross!

Once the children saw the beach there was no getting out
of this one.

I had to track down a maid and ask her for a mop and broom
and some disinfectant at which time I cleaned the place myself.

It was difficult to understand why such a prime located property
was in such poor condition. Who is in charge of maintenace
here? And why are they still employed? I suggest they get it together and make some serious changes.

The place has so much potential , they need to clean house! A little paint would do wonders and some new furniture from a local wholesaler would be a welcomed addition.

The rooms condition was simply unexceptable!

So fellow travels....Don't go into this place with
high expectations!

It is what it is!

“Okay family-friendly hotel on the beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 May 2007

We needed a place to stay for one night before diving at Isla Desecheo. Parador Villa Antonio, for all that it was the most expensive place that my wife and I stayed in Puerto Rico, was just alright. For two people in their mid 20's, it was too touristy and too kid-centric for us.

We got a room with two double beds, A/C, TV, and a private bathroom for $115/night plus tax. This was about $40-50 more a night than any place else that we stayed in PR (in other towns admittedly). It was very clean but felt more touristy and more like an all-inclusive resort than other inns - there was a swimming pool, I think a tennis court, kids play area, and guard at the entrance to the parking lot. They make you wear a bracelet to indicate that you are a guest of their hotels, presumably to make you feel more exclusive for staying there. It was odd to me. Other places we stayed had a kitchenette or at least a mini-fridge in the room, but this place didn't. It is right on the beach, which is beautiful. There is plenty of parking, and it seems quite safe.

I would recommend staying at the Vill Cofresi, right next door, over the Villa Antonio. They seemed to have the same standard of cleanliness, the same amenities, but also have a restaurant, which was quite good, and a fun bar area with great drinks. Both are quite family-friendly, but villa cofresi was more teenage-friendly and more energetic.
