“Comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011 via mobile

I have not stayed in the rooms so can't comment to much on them, except that looking at the photos of the rooms tell's me something is not quite right. The furniture is very nice, but dose not fit in to the period of the hotel and makes it look cheap and cheerful. I think if they were to put dark wood like Mahogany, or rosewood, would definitely give you that pariod feel the rooms need. I have had a meal here to celebrate my fathers 90th birthday, but we had to ask to be shown to our function room and then, we had to leave the room on a number of occasions to keep our drinks topped up. The food was exceptional, so hats off to the chef. The bar was very small, and I can't imagine what would happen if they got busy.

“well above average”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

I stayed here in August for 2 days whilst on business in the area.

Lovely hotel. Nothing to fault. Only praise for the staff, food and room etc. very good. Nothing too spectacular but very definitely far far better than the average UK hotel.

“Nice comfortable place, a bit confused but the food is amazing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

Stayed here recently with work. The hotel is fairly easy to find and well signposted. It looks nice from the outside (would look lovely in wedding pictures for example) the reception area is clean and functional.

To get to your room you have to go up a couple of small flights of stairs across the room landings, which was a bit odd.. I felt like the hotel changed from a large country hotel to a smaller b & b style at this point, which confused me a little...

Got to my room which was comfortable and well furnished, I almost felt like I was staying in a relatives spare room and not a hotel room. Comfy double bed with nice pillows. The bathroom was functional with a good hot powerful shower, which is always a bonus! The room was spotlessly clean, if a little old fashioned, the room was also roasting hot, the radiators were on full blast, I probably could have adjusted it, but I didn't try because it wasn't that much of a problem to me..

The restaurant food was excellent and good value for money, well worth having a meal here, especially as the hotel seemed quite a way out of the town.

Good breakfast with plenty of choice. It made me smile that they had placed a card on the table that said that they were aware that it was dark in the breakfast room and that the carpets were a little tired. It said that they were planning a refurb in 2012...

The staff seemed friendly and pleasant enough, all in all a nice place to stay.

“Excellent food but poor reception.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

We visited the hotel this week for bar lunches and drinks. This has been a regular haunt for us over a period of more than twenty years. The food was of the usual very high standard and service from the bar staff could not be faulted. However what is very apparent is the lack of welcome when you arrive at the hotel.Receptionists lower their heads behind the counter and make no effort to communicate with or to direct visitors to the hotels facilities.A friendly smile and word of welcome should be standard practice in this role.

“Food great, service and attitude not as good as it used to be”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2011

Had booked a table in the Restauraunt for dinner. We checked in at the bar where we ordered drinks and were given menus. We had expected to be escorted into the Restauraunt but instead we were given directions to find our table and carry our own drinks, menus, coats and all.
They'd changed the Restauraunt tables from the elegant White linnen covered to what resembled a cafe bench with placemats on.

Our starter were delicious It made us start to enjoy the evening a little but our glasses were running on empty and having had our table cleared ready for main we had to ask to order more.

Again, our main was high scoring..... But was cleared as soon as we put our knife down.... Followed by the dessert menu being forced towards us. (would usually prefer to have a pause between courses or at least asked what would be most desirable).

When our desert was cleared, instead of asking how our meal was we were told to go see the bar maid in the other room to pay! Ha! What has happened to this place?

As we wanted to stay and enjoy the rest of the evening by the table we waited and later ask if the bill could be delivered to the table ..... We waited and waited so we gave in and had to go find someone to pay.

This used to be my favourite Dinning out experience but both myself and my partner agreed that we won't be returning any time soon. I really hope this can be used as constructive critisism; a step up on service and attitude alone would have changed our experience dramatically.

Despite all this, I have chosen the 'recommend to a friend' option because the food is that good - thanks chefs
