“Good Hotel, but in need of refresh!”

Just returned from a week at Vuni after a long weekend in Istanbul.
Overall we had a lovely time in N Cyprus. But beware the Vuni is definatley not a 5* hotel and is in need of refresh. Arrived at hotel quite late and found the staff extreamly helpful and courteous, First impressions were good with a nice reception area and when arriving at our room it looked good, however on closer inspection the room was not particulary clean, the bed spread had a cigerette burn (although smoking was banned in the hotel some 2 years ealier) and the walls were very scuffed, the TV was very old with poor picture quality & would have taken at least two people to move it! However the room was large with two double beds and the view was wonderful taking in the pool area and sea/beach. We did view the port but it didnt detract.
The pool area was probably the best bit as it was spacious, clean & never crowded. I was dissapointed with breakfast as there was little choice, Only two choices of cereal (corn flakes or Chocopops!) plenty of cheese with all different toppings but little other choice. and eggs any way you want but again little other choice apart from Hallumi cheese! The pool/beach bar was nice but was dissapointed that beer was served in plastic glasses and coffee in paper cups (Oscars next door part of same Hotel group served glasses & proper cups and is 4*)
Finally the short cut to the harbour is at best 25 minutes away and not a particulary pleasant walk through a pretty run down area, even the courtesy train took nearly 10 minutes, so as we were on B&B we got a taxi every night (11Lira £4) had some great meals in Kyrenia at around £20 per head including wine, with great ambiance. Taxi back at about 11.00pm to find main bar was closed but drinks availible in lobby bar which was always empty, So had a few early nights!
Overall we had a good time in Kyrenia and I would probably stay at Vuni again but it could be so much better with a little thought & TLC

Room Tip: Rooms with sea view in main buliding are best and with an odd number

“Excellent Hotel Close to Harbour”

We spent a week at this hotel and really enjoyed the stay. The rooms were immaculate, very spacious and very clean. The location is a 10 minute walk from the Harbour. The hotel pools are very clean and spacious. The breakfast menu was very varied and good value for money with very helpful staff. The staff at reception were helpful but struggled a bit with English, I guess they were placed there to cater more for the numerous german guests at the hotel. Each room has a private patio area. The evening buffet at the hotel is a bit pricey at 55 lira so we decided to eat out. However, we ate at the sister hotel (Oscar hotel) which is located next door on a few occasions and the buffet was great. The Oscar hotel has also got a spa which can be used by residents of the Vuni Palace hotel as they are under the same ownership. Overall we had a great time at the hotel. The back drop mountain views from the hotel are great and the atmosphere surrounding the hotel is very peaceful.

“Five Star no way”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2010

We used this hotel for the second week of our visit to North Cyprus expecting it to be better than our first week in a 4 star, no way. The service here was shocking, the staff are surly and unfriendly, there is not enough of them to keep a hotel of this size running smoothly. Three times during the week we were there, we had to put the do not disturb sign on the door as the rooms had not been serviced by 4.30 pm and we wanted a shower and to get ready to go out to the harbour for something to eat. Several times in the week when we went for the buffet breakfast at around 9.00 a.m. the containers for the fruit were empty, there was no yoghurt and we had to wait at least 15 mins before a member of staff brought out fresh. One morning when this happened there seemed to be only one member of staff refilling the cold buffet and cooking eggs and omlettes to fill the hot buffet. The food itself was edible but the hot buffet was not good, we lived on fried eggs and houlmi cheese most of the week. The rooms were spacious with 2 queen beds in each, the furniture was scratched and the wardrobe doors refused to slide. The balcony was never mopped and was grubby as was the furniture. The bathroom had seen better days, silicone sealant was visible on all the cracks and crevices. The power shower was good. The outside area was good, plenty of sunbeds and the pool was enormous. The beach area was good, the brochure stated a pebble beach but there was plenty of sand ideal for children. There didn't appear to be much entertainment this may have been because it was late on in the season. The prices in this hotel were astronomical, an example a tuna salad at our previous hotel, the harbour and local restaurants was 12 TL in the hotel 20TL. Drinks were twice the price and the staff wondered why no-one was buying them. The indoor pool, fitness centre was out of bounds as a result of a flood in February this year, for reasons best know to the management they had not had these repaired but were building a new block of rooms at the side of the main building. All in all for a 5 star hotel it was rubbish and we certainly wouldn't entertain going there again. For a decent meal we walaked 10 minutes up the road to where the street met the main road to a little place called Alestra, their kebaps and their sirloin steak were to die for and so reasonably priced, the steak was 20TL and came with salad and proper cyprus chips yummy.

“5 Star - absolutely not !!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2010

Have just returned from a week at Vuni Palace and will certainly not be returning. On arrival we were offered four different rooms none of which were the sea view room we had paid for but the attitude of the staff was such that we accepted the fourth room which had a side sea view of the docks but at least we could see water.

Unfortunately things didn't improve. The bufffet breakfast and dinner were not up to 3 star standard never mind 5 star. The chef coudn't even be bothered to cook individual eggs / omlettes each morning but instead cooked in batches and put in a hot tray. The dinner was even worse - in my experience when in 5 star hotels, a featured dish would be in evidence being prepared by a chef for individuals but nothing like this was offered in Vuni Palace and if you didn't like lamb (which my husband doesn't) the other choices were even worse. Tea and coffee were only served at breakfast and with no kettles in the rooms it cost 7 lira for a cup of tea or coffee throughout the day.

Overall there was no Manager in evidence either in Reception or Maitre D in the Restaurant and this was very obvious from the attitude of all the staff who were definitely not happy at their work to the extent that they were unhelpful to guests and this created a very poor atmosphere which spoilt the holiday.

It offered no entertainment apart from a bingo game and quiz on 2 nights which was attending by 4 people each evening and the person who described the surrounding area as Beirut was correct as we tried walking at nightime looking for somewhere more friendly and the unlit streets were dangerous.

In it's favour it has a very nice plage overlooking the sea where we usually manged to get sunbeds.

In summary this is a 2/3 star hotel charing 5 star prices
