My husband and I stayed in this hotel for 2 weeks from 12-26 July 2008. I had read some mixed reviews on Trip Advisor and so was a little worried about what to expect, as it wasn't cheap (just over £2,000 for the flights and hotel half board). We don't have children and I would say that the key to enjoying this hotel is to stay there outside of the school holidays. When we first arrived the hotel was relatively quiet. There were a few children playing in the pool (which I had no problem at all with) and you could get a sun lounger by the pool throughout the day without much trouble. It was pleasant to sit and read and dip in and out of the water as the area itself is well landscaped and set against the sea and the mountains with only a few villas nearby.
As the 2 weeks passed the pool area became overrun and towards the end it was not a very nice experience (screaming children everywhere, people bomb diving into the pool all the time - probably quite good for families). One morning we were having breakfast at 7 a.m. before a round of golf and an English woman (I'm sorry to say) came down and "reserved" 7 sun loungers with some towels, which added an annoying layer of stress to the stay. As it got busier we felt forced out to the man made beach where you paid €3 each to hire a sun lounger for the day. The area itself was really lovely, but again towards the end of the holiday even this became overrun and we had to nip down when we woke up (around 9 a.m.) to put our towel under one of the relatively few umbrellas (Tip - take your own umbrella then you're more flexible, there is sand you can wedge it in). So we became the English woman we disliked so much! But we didn't feel so bad as we were paying for the lounger for the day.
The point is that the hotel facilities are not adequate when it is full.
The room we had was very nice (the standard double). The décor was relatively recent and modern and there was quite a lot of space. The bathroom was marble with twin sinks, so there were a few nice touches which made the room very good. My only complaint on the rooms is that I had emailed ahead and had a room on the 6th floor confirmed by the reservations department (as previous reviews had recommended a high floor) and when I got there they told me we had a 4th floor room. It was tough basically - despite complaining quite forcefully (in Spanish as I am fluent, which usually helps!). We let it go because the view from the 4th floor was still good, as was the room. If we'd been on the 6th floor we would have had a much better view, however. Tip - I recommend a back room on a high floor. Although you can see the area where the rubbish is thrown out, you can also see the sea and the mountains as long as you're towards the sea end of the hotel. Otherwise you will be overlooking the rather noisy pool.
The general décor of the hotel itself was also very tasteful and modern, with comfy sofas and fresh flowers inside and good outdoor furniture.
In terms of the food, we had breakfast and dinner almost every day as we were on half board. This was very good (and I love my food!). In both cases there is a buffet with staff cooking some items freshly. There is an outside element to the main restaurant, which we were big fans of. If you wanted to make sure you got a seat outside you either had to arrive when the restaurant opened at 7 or else come a little later, around 9, but it was well worth it. The service in the restaurant was particularly good, although throughout the hotel we had no complaints about the service other than in relation to the room we were allocated.
For breakfast there was a lovely selection of fresh fruit (pineapple, kiwi, oranges etc), yogurts, cereals (every kind you can think of), cured and cooked meats, breads and so on. Or you could have eggs, omelette, bacon, sausages, tomatoes cooked on request. A previous review made it sound like you had to wait an age for your hot food, which was misleading. Some items were cooked in a dish ready for you to help yourself. You had to wait a few minutes if you wanted something cooking freshly, but it wasn't a long wait and you are on holiday!
For dinner there was a lot of salad to choose from (lovely fresh rocket, cherry tomatoes etc), again some very nice cured meats, various prepared cold dishes and some tasty and often warm bread (sometimes bread in Spain is a little dodgy, but they had lovely baguettes, loaves, rolls). For the main course you could chose from a selection of hot prepared dishes (pasta, meat with sauces, vegetables, potatoes) or there were 2 hot plates where the staff cooked fresh meat, fish and seafood which varied from day to day (the prawns in shells were very popular, as was the squid). It was all very fresh and well prepared - not gourmet, but tasty. The lunch at the café bar was not very varied or particularly nice, so probably best to head out for lunch (although the Tuna salad was good).
That said, you are not within easy walking distance of the nearby towns (or much else) - this is part of the charm if it is what you are expecting, which we were. I would recommend hiring a car - most of the companies deliver the car to the hotel and pick it up again from their branches in Cala Millor. There is a hotel car park where we always got a space (you need a room key to get in and out). There are a few good golf courses, although not loads. The one which is nearest to the hotel (Son Servera) was a very pretty course (9 hole) which suited both me as a beginner and my husband as a good player. A nice day out is to Cap de Formentor. It's especially pleasant to have some food in the pizza bar by the beach which is on the road to the Hotel Formentor (very exclusive). The beach used to be private but has now been made public. You have to pay to park but then you can claim that back if you eat.
One word of caution, in the deeper waters (at least in July) there are loads of Jellyfish! My husband swam across the bay most days and got stung (mildly) on the face every time. I don't like the sea very much but I ventured in and unfortunately got stung quite badly (it got infected and I had to go to the minor injuries clinic on my return to England). So be careful! If you stay in the shallow waters, I think you'll be alright.
Overall, we had a lovely holiday which was slightly marred by the increasing busyness.
