I have just returned from 2 weeks in Vale do Lobo in the Algarve. It rates itself as a 5 star resort but on this occassion it would be pushing it to be ranked 2 star. Major sections of the resort are like a building site, there are major delays and contraflows on the main entrance roads, delays are common.
My biggest gripe is the actual lack of customer service. No effort was made to minimise the disruption. If you are going soon, go to the next resort or be very patient!!
Still a good resort for those with families but not worth the premium they demand at the moment

Just returned from our second year going there; I read with interest another review criticising Design Holidays; not surprised - they tried to rip me off and I ended enquiry. Try Sun Hat holidays - we have used them twice and they are terrific. Before booking ask for map of resort which shows you all villa locations try to be nearer the sea as you can then walk to the Praca in the evening. You will need a car as the supermarket is a long walk - don't attempt it in high season. For something special try Julio's at Dounas or the Thai restaurant on the main road. We are going again next year.

A return visit to this hotel in early November confirmed my impressions formed during previous stays. At random then, although the rooms (apart from the suites) are basically
similar in design and layout,try to get those which catch the afternoon-evening sun. As always, attention from staff (front
desk through to room/floor/bar/restaurant/pool) is competent
& friendly. This may have something to do with staff who are there year on year. Breakfast is served poolside is sufficient
for most,the only food we had there otherwise was on arrival
in the Restaurant (good) and Bar Tapas prior to departure (excellent). We did not hire a car this time, using the Hotel organised Mini-bus to/from the Golf Course at San Lorenzo (impeccable time keeping) during the day and taxis to/from
Almancil & Vilamoura at night. I would recommend this hotel and their web-based deals for stays outside peak season (my preferred time to visit the area)
