“Felt like a haunted house”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2010

Let me start out by saying that I very, very rarely write bad reviews on hotels. I'm generally a really enthusiastic guy - I love to travel, and not much will make me feel bad about my trip.

This hotel however.. It just wasn't my thing.
It's not that its bad - by all means - its just .. misleading. The pictures, the hotels.com profile, everything..

When we arrived we where the only guest on the hotel. The receptionist looked almost frightened to see us. "eeh.. do you have a reservation?" "Yes we do.." "eeh okay.."
It was weird - a bit like "The Shining", just this deserted hotel, with only us. It almost looked like some sort of disease had just broken out and made all the guests leave everything behind and flee for their lives - barr the receptionist who was doomed to stay to spread the word to mankind.

The most annoying thing was that this place really has potential. It could be really charming - if it wasn't for the dust, the stains and the spots.
All the rooms in this hotel are on the second floor - in the hallway they have placed shelves and a huge desk by the end window. Quite nice - if it wasn't for the top of the shelves being stacked with dirty glasses and used cutlery.
And it smelled. The whole hotel smells of rotten spice or something of that sort. The rooms are airconditioned - praise thy lord - but the hallways do not enjoy this luxury.

Hotels.com told us this was a 4 star hotel, with a restaurant. The restaurant was closed - which was a nuisance too - considering the earlier mentioned plague presumably has spread to Faro too (all the recommended restaurants from Lonely Planted were closed and barricaded).
Hotels.com also states that this is a hotel close to Faro Airport. It's just not - considering all the hotels in Faro itself are so much closer - this was the sole purpose of our stay, to have the last night in Portugal really close to the gate. If you're planning on doing the same - just stay in Faro itself (but pack your lunch from somewhere else, and arrive late, cus Faro is really a shadow of what it once must have been).

The problem when writing a hotel review is that you can always be labeled snobbish and high maintenance - but that's where price comes into play. If I'd have paid €40 for this, I would have been very happy! The problem is that I paid €85!!

Considering I stayed at the Tiara Park Atlantic in Lisboa on the same trip (its a five star hotel, HIGHLY recommended) for the same price (!!!!!) made me instantly try to cancel the booking. Do you think the receptionist would allow that?
"I'm sorry, I can't do that, because the owner isn't here". No of course he isn't. The infamous Savoy Chef naturally left this passion some time ago. Did someone say Investment hotel? Well, who can blame him. But I'm not coming back.

PS. I would love to say some nice words about the food - but the restaurant was, as earlier mentioned; closed.
Oh; sorry - we did get an english breakfast.. I've had better.

On the pro side: They have San Miguel on tap in the bar.

“Perfectly adequate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 April 2010

Rooms basic but comfortable. The much praised owner/Savoy chef person not in evidence during our stay ( or he couldn't be bothered to speak to us!) Busy playing golf I think. Can't comment on the food except for breakfast which was ok. The staff in evidence were friendly and helpful although sometimes we had to ask for an extra towel in our room. We managed without hiring a car for our 5 day stay as there are any excellent restaurants in Almancil, although there are several with rather anglicised menus- "death by lamb shank" etc.

“Lovely Stay with Great Service & Food”

We stayed at the A Colina for a couple of nights and had a wonderful time. Its located in a lovley private and secluded area overlooking a beautiful valley. Rooms were spotlessly clean and the Service we received was first class.
We ate hear on both nights and the food was lovely, fresh and to a high standard.
I would recommend this place over any of the over priced 5 star Hotels in the area.

“Hidden Gem in the Algarve”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 June 2009

Owned by a former Head Chef at the Savoy in London, this home-away from home offers very comfortable surrounding, a great location and, as might be expected, wonderful food. Twenty minutes from the, thoroughly spoiled coast, this is a great place from which to explore the region. All of the staff went out of their way to make guests feel welcome. Highly recommended.

“What a gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2008

Our friends who live in Portugal recommended us to stay here - they regularly eat there and love the place.

We normally stay in 5* (expensive) hotels and this was intended to be a last-minute getaway so we didn't expect too much. How wrong we were! We had the best break we've had in ages!

The hotel is situated in the ludo valley, about 20 minutes from Faro airport and is completely tranquil, with great views across the valley towards the sea.

The owner and head chef, Lee, his wife Anna and their excellent team of staff go out of their way to make you feel completely at home and relaxed. The bedrooms are a little basic, but comfortable. Lee informed us that these are next on the list to be upgraded. The rooms on the back of the hotel have large balconies with sunbeds and table/chairs to take in the views.

Lee was once head chef at the Savoy, so good food is guaranteed! We stayed from 6th to 14th September and some days had the hotel to ourselves, which was like having our own villa but with staff on tap - brilliant! The pool is great (but a bit chillly!) and the terrace is a beautiful place to take breakfast.

There are literally dozens of great restaurants within striking distance and the beach is about 20 minutes drive away.

All in all, a great base for an Algarve holiday - good value, great service and we'll definitely return.

  • Liked — The great service
  • Disliked — The small bathroom (although the shower was great)
