Let me start out by saying that I very, very rarely write bad reviews on hotels. I'm generally a really enthusiastic guy - I love to travel, and not much will make me feel bad about my trip.
This hotel however.. It just wasn't my thing.
It's not that its bad - by all means - its just .. misleading. The pictures, the hotels.com profile, everything..
When we arrived we where the only guest on the hotel. The receptionist looked almost frightened to see us. "eeh.. do you have a reservation?" "Yes we do.." "eeh okay.."
It was weird - a bit like "The Shining", just this deserted hotel, with only us. It almost looked like some sort of disease had just broken out and made all the guests leave everything behind and flee for their lives - barr the receptionist who was doomed to stay to spread the word to mankind.
The most annoying thing was that this place really has potential. It could be really charming - if it wasn't for the dust, the stains and the spots.
All the rooms in this hotel are on the second floor - in the hallway they have placed shelves and a huge desk by the end window. Quite nice - if it wasn't for the top of the shelves being stacked with dirty glasses and used cutlery.
And it smelled. The whole hotel smells of rotten spice or something of that sort. The rooms are airconditioned - praise thy lord - but the hallways do not enjoy this luxury.
Hotels.com told us this was a 4 star hotel, with a restaurant. The restaurant was closed - which was a nuisance too - considering the earlier mentioned plague presumably has spread to Faro too (all the recommended restaurants from Lonely Planted were closed and barricaded).
Hotels.com also states that this is a hotel close to Faro Airport. It's just not - considering all the hotels in Faro itself are so much closer - this was the sole purpose of our stay, to have the last night in Portugal really close to the gate. If you're planning on doing the same - just stay in Faro itself (but pack your lunch from somewhere else, and arrive late, cus Faro is really a shadow of what it once must have been).
The problem when writing a hotel review is that you can always be labeled snobbish and high maintenance - but that's where price comes into play. If I'd have paid €40 for this, I would have been very happy! The problem is that I paid €85!!
Considering I stayed at the Tiara Park Atlantic in Lisboa on the same trip (its a five star hotel, HIGHLY recommended) for the same price (!!!!!) made me instantly try to cancel the booking. Do you think the receptionist would allow that?
"I'm sorry, I can't do that, because the owner isn't here". No of course he isn't. The infamous Savoy Chef naturally left this passion some time ago. Did someone say Investment hotel? Well, who can blame him. But I'm not coming back.
PS. I would love to say some nice words about the food - but the restaurant was, as earlier mentioned; closed.
Oh; sorry - we did get an english breakfast.. I've had better.
On the pro side: They have San Miguel on tap in the bar.
