The hotel is in an elevated position just behind the main street running through Lech village and as such has the benefit of being in a quiet location whilst very convenient for access to the lifts, shops and bars.
We arrived quite late in the evening with just enough time to check-in, get shown to our room and then have dinner (served until 9.00pm). Upon returning to our bedroom we were impressed to see a small complementary bottle of champagne chilling in an ice bucket and selection of fruits had been left as a welcome. Unfortunately what we didn’t find was the balcony which we had pre-booked via Inghams!
The absence of the balcony was reported to reception in the morning and also to the rep and was eventually resolved after some delays on day 3 of our holiday when we were moved to the modern extension. It was an inconvenience which we could have done without.
We are in the position therefore to report on two room styles at the hotel during our week long visit - firstly #20 - the “Arlberg” type and secondly #67 - the “Hasenfluh” type.
Our first room was on the first floor in the original part of the building and was a traditional Austrian twin with a seating area and table. The room was a reasonable size and there was plenty of wardrobe space and coat hooks at various points which was handy for hanging our ski jackets, etc. Inside the wardrobe a safe was provided free of charge. For entertainment there was a small box TV and a CD player. A mini-bar was well stocked however in common with most hotels the “reasonable” prices are not attractive and I always feel that this is a missed opportunity to serve guests - even by charging at the equivalent hotel bar prices. The ensuite had a standard length bath with a decent overhead shower and a folding glass screen. The bathroom and bedroom windows overlooked a flat roof to the side of the hotel and a few houses and therefore the view couldn’t be described as scenic. It was our belief also that the net curtain on the bathroom window didn’t provide total privacy. The bathroom however was well equipped with hairdryer, extending shaving mirror, bathroom scales, etc. Attention to detail is such that the hotel even provide an umbrella for guests to use if the weather outside requires it! Although the room was next to the lift we didn’t get disturbed by this during the time we stayed - and the room was convenient for access to the reception, lounge and dining room.
Our second room was in a recently built extension. From outside this appears as a separate building however it is connected by an underground corridor link which has been nicely designed to incorporate a library (with a couple of free to use computers) and a childrens playroom, together with the spa and hotel storage. The ski and bootroom is also off this corridor which leads to the elevator taking guests to street level and the nearby Rufikopf gondola. Whilst this could easily have been functional, to the owners’ credit the whole area is finished off in style - including the bathrooms on this level which are spotless. The ski and bootroom is spacious and although boot warmers would have been a bonus we had no complaints as the area was well heated.
Our second room was quite a contrast to the first. It had modern furnishings and a double bed. The spacious balcony with two sunbeds provided a lovely view of the mountains, hotel garden and overlooked the Rufikopf gondola. There was no bath however the walk-in shower was excellent. The TV in this room was flat screen and there was a CD/DVD player built in to the furnishings. There was a comfortable sofa and chair and the other facilities from our first room were replicated with the exception of the coat hooks which were lacking. Overall we much preferred this room -the “Hasenfluh” type.
The food and service in the hotel restaurant were excellent. The restaurant and bar staff are very attentive, friendly and are the best that I have experienced in my travels by some margin. The food consisted of multiple courses each evening - usually with a couple of choices per course -all good quality and we always left feeling well-fed. Occasionally we even had to miss out on the cheese selection, which varied each evening, because we were too full. There was also a very good selection of wines - around 35 Euros per bottle upwards. An Austrian buffet, featuring a selection of local dishes was held one night served up by the chefs which was a good excuse to sample a variety of foods.
The spa is nude only and whilst you can use a towel for modesty purposes don’t try that in the whirlpool.
Smoking is still permitted in the bar which is unfortunate - the log fire gives off enough to be going on with!
As for the skiing, the hotel is close to two lifts giving access to loads of runs. We found the grading of these wasn't very accurate in many cases and you therefore don't get much of a guide. Some ski "routes" were easier than expected in our experience and some blues and reds had steep sections which only confident intermediates would appreciate. Amongst those we enjoyed were the wooded sections at Sonnenkopf - 2 buses/1 hour away - in bad weather; and with fresh snow - run 10 Muggengrat to Zurs (steep start); route 56 Madloch to Lech; and route 48 base of Steinmahder lift down to Zug village. Some curbing of "racers" on the piste is required but not enforced. After 1.00pm the pistes all over became quiet and more enjoyable.
