“Cozy, Quiet, Remote”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2010

We stayed here for two nights and loved our little unit. We got a two bedroom place. It had two bedrooms, bathroom with seperate toilet, a laundry room with washer and dryer, living room area(TV with some austar channels, DVD player, CD player), dining room table and I believe a full kitchen. The fireplace was nice on the chilly nights. I believe there was also a BBQ right outside with a little porch but it was too chilly on our visit to spend much time outside. It was a great place and beautiful area, very tranquil if you like to be out of town and away from people. It is quite remote, it is about a 15-20 minute drive out of town to get to it. So if you're looking to be out of town on your own then it is great. The glow worms at night were a nice added bonus and there was a hike you could do to a waterfall but we didn't have time for that. As I said if you like to be in out of the way places this is great but if you want to be near town and able to walk around the shops and stuff then this would be too far out of town for you. A great place and we enjoyed ourself and really liked the kitchen set-up they had.

“Fantastic, peaceful getaway!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 May 2010

My wife and I spent four nights in the Gully Nook cottage on our honeymoon. We absolutely loved it. The setting is among temperate forest, with huge eucalyptus trees, ferns, and lush plant life all around. It's about a 10-minute drive up a 2-lane road from Apollo Bay, set on a hillside in the country. The owners, John and Joanne, were extremely kind and helpful. The cottage had a full kitchen, beautiful wooden floors and staircase, and a large bathroom with a corner tub (we never used it, being too busy exploring the amazing forests and beaches in the area). The shower had two shower heads, with independent controls for each! Even the big resorts where we stayed didn't have that feature! There's a trail to a small waterfall on the property, and the glow-worm trail is an absolute must.

In the area, we really enjoyed: (a) the Otway Fly Skywalk, (b) trails to waterfalls like Triplet Falls and Hopetoun Falls; and (c) Gibson's Steps and all the trails at Loch Ard Gorge (near the 12 Apostles, but do NOT just go to the crowded, touristy lookout there). Be aware that driving times tend to be long due to the twisting roads (12 Apostles are about 1.5 hours away), and you have to get out of your car to see the scenery. Also, the cottage is best suited for two, as the bedroom is not separate from the living area. Firm mattresses seem to be the norm in Australia, and this one was, but we're comfortable that way.

We actually enjoyed the Otway Forest more than the Daintree up north. Overall, this was one of our favorite places to stay.

“Fantastic Location!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2009

We arrived very late on a Friday night, so the owners had to make arrangements for us to get into our cottage which was nice. Be warned, make sure you check your directions if you are intending to arrive at night. The location is in the middle of nowhere off the beaten track so to speak (this is half the appeal).

Once you pay for the accomodation, you are pretty much left alone which is good. The cottages are clean and modest and they just provide enough fire wood for your stay. The only compliant I would have is that they are pretty "tight" when it came to providing toilet paper. We booked in for 6 people for a weekend and there was only 2 rolls of 2 ply paper which ran out very quickly!

The location is truely amazing. There are walking tracks (creek crossing is involved) and glo worms at night which is a fantastic side to nature. During the day, the drive to this facility is truely magical. There are some very "post card like" properties nearby.

Would I recommend this place to anybody? YES. Go for it. It's very good value too.

“Truly Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2006

These cottages are located in the Otway rainforest, about 9km off the Great Ocean Road in Apollo Bay. Turning off the Great Ocean Road, the drive takes you past farmland (featuring sheep, cows and alpacas) and then into the rainforest. The rainforest is truly magical. Lush canopies, giant mountain ash trees and numerous birds.

We stayed in one of the one bedroom cottages, called the Kookaburra. The cottages are very well kept. We had a full kitchen and living room, with satellite TV, and up the stairs to the bedroom. The bathroom has a two person tub (though the hot water tank isn't quite big enough to fill it) and a two person shower. The woodwork throughout the cottage is exceptional.

Sitting on the porch you can hear sheep and cows in the nearby pastures, and you can see wild parrotts, crimson rosellas (look like parrots except red and blue instead of yellow and green) and kookaburra. Kookaburra are only found in Australia and New Zealand and have a distinctive call, like a human laugh. It's great to hear them out and about in the morning and evening.

Walking trails are available to Paradise Falls, and Mariner Falls isn't far away. At night, the glow worms are out along the trails. The town's name is Paradise, and I don't think they are overstating their case!
