“Location was handy to the Derwent Entertainment Centre”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

We were travelling with family who were attending a function at the DEC. The location of this place was very handy to the DEC, but actually finding how to get into the park in the first place is a little tricky, and signage isn't terribly helpful.

As we arrived late at night, we were able to locate the keys to the safe well enough, but then had a shocking time trying to find the cottage we'd rented. It turns out there wasn't much space (despite the advertising you can park outside the door) to park our car, and had to walk the kids up a dark path to the door in the middle of the night. I also didn't like the fact we were unable to see the car from the cottage at all.

The cottage itself had dated decor but overall wasn't below my expectations for what we were paying. One room had all matching doona covers and the kids were happy to see the toys available to play with. It was clean and tidy which I would expect from anywhere I was paying to stay at.

On the first night, we were kept awake by a neighbour's dog that barked continuously right out side the bedroom window. It wasn't until the next morning I realised how close the neighbours are to the park. I feel the advertising that the property is on "acerage" is a little deceiving as it gives the impression of space and quiet, which unfortunately we found to be the opposite. The rest of the park however was nice and quiet.

It was disappointing to see that the games room was closed due to vandalism, and the children's park was not anything exciting. However, a discussion with the owners during checkout revealed how a sports team that stayed months earlier had absolutely trash the place, so it's to the owner's credit that they are still open. I also understand that the economic climate has left a shortage of funds to rectify a lot of what has been done.

The second night was a lot quieter and we all had a comfortable night's sleep. We were glad we'd come prepared with our own food as the small milk in the fridge was out of date by two months. Again though, further conversation with the owners revealed an invoice that proved they had only just had the milk delivered and were supplied with out of date milk that week. They appeared just as mortified that the milk was out of date and by so much, and made immediate plans to replace the milk in each cabin.

Overall, this place isn't what I'd call premium, but neither is the price. We had two families travelling together, so for a self contained, 8 bedroom, two bathroom property, I'm satisfied that we got what we paid for. However, I do note we stayed in an off peak season, so I wouldn't be prepared to pay any more than we did if the price went up for the summer season.

“Spend the extra money and find somewhere else to stay.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2011

We stayed here for seven nights in and it was not an experience we would care to repeat.

The unit was basically OK in terms of size and fittings, but was badly let down by non existent maintenance and a complete lack of input from management. For example there were signs everywhere telling you all the rules, but nothing to let you know that the teeny tiny hot water cylinder needs to be rested for at least ten minutes between showers, or the second person will have a freezing shower.

The hygiene of the shower left something to be desired as the bottom edge had a line of mold around it.

All the plumbing: (and by that I mean every single tap in the place) dripped and needed two hands to be turned off and on. Also the extractor in the bathroom did not operate, (nor did the one over the kitchen stove). And the bathroom window was sealed shut so the unit could not be ventilated at all.

The other issue was that the bed was covered in puffy pillows, with a sign telling you that they were for decoration only and not to be used. However there was absolutely nowhere to store these and as space in the unit was at a premium they ended up spending a week zipped up in our suitcases. Why they are not simply removed by the management was beyond us. They were nothing but a nuisance.

To cap things off, the office kept very short hours and we never saw anyone again once we had checked in, as the office was never open when we left or returned each day.

Spend the extra money and find somewhere else to stay.

“If you like to sleep bring earplugs.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2010

Check-in was very friendly the service at reception was very helpful.
It was a bit of a shock when we saw the size of the 5 berth cabin, lets say we saw a lot of Hobart and a little of Elwick during the day. The cabin we had should not be advertised to sleep 5( in our case 2 adults and three kids under 10), in the owners defence they did offer me a villa when booking but who doesn't want to try and keep costs down when travelling. Dogs over the fence start barking from 1-3am and then the starlings in the roof space go to work at about 5am to feed their precious young fledglings, so my advice is go to bed early, or bring earplugs and listen to your heart beating all night. It just felt the location for this place was wrong - it was kind of land locked in suburbia-a holiday park should have a lot more room between itself and the neighbours. The Chux you use to wash your dishes is recyled - how many times do you have to wash a Chux before it loses its blue colour? The kids "play" area was a health hazard, broken wood boards on the play house floor with exposed nails, and play equipment on unlevel ground. I enjoyed the walk to the laundry to use the communal ironing board and iron. What does it cost to put an iron in each cabin. If you use the BBQ you have to clean it after use- fair enough- but there's nothing to clean it with!- no paper towel or sink nearby- a used Chux and half a pot scourer wont cut it I'm afraid. The place just looks really tired. I dont have super high expectations when i stay in Holiday parks and I'm not a snob, but i think the owners really need to reinvest some of their takings back into their business before they get any more of mine.

“Would not stay here again!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2010 via mobile

This place really needs a face lift! The standard family cabin is small and very dated. The freeway next to the park means you hear traffic all threw the night too. However the owners are nice and helpfull, and the toys in the room are a great idea. But would not stay here again

“Quiet, clean, comfortable & secure self contained cabins”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2009

Elwick was far enough out of Hobart to be peaceful, yet close enough to all the tourist attractions to have the best of both worlds. We stayed here for the first 4 nights of our Tassie holiday, and we were very comfortable. The bedrooms and shower were a bit cramped, but otherwise, we were very happy with the Elwick cabins.
