I have come to Swell many times to visit family who are permanent residents there. This probably gives me a different perspective on the place because I'm not there to get my money's worth for a once-a-year break. eg, I can't comment on front-of-house or cleaning staff, because I don't need to see them. Here's my take, in no particular order:
> Secure and plentiful parking. Bad news when the power if off - the roller door refuses.
> Secure key entry to lifts with fob.
> Lovely pool and BBQ area, with enforced curfew. No private partying allowed New Year's Eve, and possibly other public holidays as well. Check before buying your supplies and inviting your friends!
> No noise inside. Expect the security guard at the door if you're playing loud card games or laughing at great jokes.(or similar.)
> Rubbish room cleaned and sanitized regularly. Some guests seem to be absolute grots, so this is an ongoing and onerous task. Congratulations to the management on this.
> Blankets and pillows are a bit short on.
> Tiny balcony, but pleasant for port, chocolate and cheese at midnight, when the traffic has calmed down a bit.
> Modern fittings.
> Walk to North Burleigh for you daily constitutional, beach or paved path. About 4.2k all up. Or try the walk around Burleigh Headland to/from Tallebudgera.
> VERY uncomfortable lounge suite, one of those ones you sit ON, rather than IN. Low back support. Stylish, but hopeless for watching a movie.
> Rock hard beds. Maybe you like this.
> No privacy from neighbouring balcony users. No problem, just make friends. Bad news if you can't stand cigarette smoke though.
> View is scant because of high buildings on the beach side of the highway. You can see enough to check the waves.
> Fellow guests I've met in the lifts have been friendly and prepared to at least make eye contact. Hey, they're on holidays!
> Road noise to be expected from a major Gold Coast Highway. Keep the door shut.
> Bus turn lane right at the entrance to what was the tavern, Some noise.
> Front balcony (ocean facing) hot in the mornings. It's Queensland, folks!
> Lifts sometimes break down. Use the other one!
> Many great eateries a short walk away.
> Burleigh Heads Bowling Club - tasty inexpensive food, and live music at the weekends.
> Bowls games difficult to come by because the club is VERY busy. Book in a few days ahead, or put you name down in anticipation of getting a game. Old style friendliness among the members. NO RESTAURANT New Year's Eve.
> Restaurants in the Old Burleigh Theatre building not open New Year's Eve.
> Fantastic Pizza Restaurant downstairs. Does take-aways and phone orders as well as inhouse. Book.
> Surf club just over the road. Book for dinner. It's very popular.
> Burleigh Heads is Op shoppers heaven.
> Bottle-oh in James Street, in lieu of the now-defunct tavern downstairs.
> Tiny, efficent laundry cupboard in 2nd bathroom. Make sure the extractor fan is working, or you'll die of heat exhaustion showering while the dryer is on.
> Park your car, and walk everywhere.
> Internet access is pretty expensive, and WiFi a bit dodgy, but go to the library just out the back door, opposite the Bowling Club. Much cheaper, and certainly faster.
> Fabulous beachfront restaurant just up Connors Street, with the waves literally breaking below the open windows. Book!
It's a lovely place, close to lots of activities, mostly more sedate than Surfers. Go for it.
Room Tip: If you like to have the doors open and the airconditioning off, don't go for an ocean view (?)ro...
