“Just Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2007

This gem is divided into three sections, a B&B- the "lighthouse keeper's cottage" and two self contained units the "assistant lighthouse keeper's" and "visiting officer's" cottage.
We stayed with family in one of the self contained cottages for the weekend for a wedding held at the lighthouse. It was just beautiful. We have stayed in South West Rocks plenty of times but this was the first time we'd been out to the lighthouse, and definitly won't be the last.
The first thing that hits you on arrival is the view- set high up on the point overlooking deserted beaches on either side, the spectacular white lighthouse stands out against the bright blue sky.
The cottages are heritage buildings, beautiful hardwood floors, original fireplaces etc but have all the mod cons- tv, dvd, microwave, dryer and bbq. Two bedrooms- one queen bed and three singles, separate lounge and dining but best was the large balcony surrounding the cottage overlooking the ocean.
The wedding we attended was held in the yard of the B&B with the spectacular back drop of the beach and ocean, the reception was then held at the cottages.
The next morning we woke to find kangaroos grazing in the yard of the cottage.
The owners of the B&B also run the cottages and were wonderful during our stay, friendly and helpful but also respected our privacy.
The cottages were perfect, they were an ideal place for a large group with children but would also be great for couples- very romantic.
We can't wait to go back.

“Highlight of trip to Australia”

My husband and I spent 2 weeks travelling up the Eastern Coast of Australia, and by accident found the Smoky Cape Lighthouse. It is some distance from the nearest town, and we even met a couple of kangaroos on the road to the lighthouse!

This became one of the most memorable stays of our holiday. The owners of the B&B are incredibly hospitable and kind, allowing guests to use their kitchen and BBQ facilities. The 3 course breakfast the next morning was definately one of the best we had our entire 6 week trip around the world. The room we stayed in was lovely, with a four poster bed. But the real highlight was being able to walk the short distance up to the lighthouse late at night, and watch the beam from the lighthouse going out to sea. The view at night of the stars and sea was nearly matched the next morning, by the stunning coastline.

Overall a really individual, beautifully maintained property, made even more special by an incomparable location and wonderfully hospitable hosts.

  • Liked — The views and the breakfast!
  • Disliked — Very windy road up to the lighthouse, with kangaroos to avoid!

“Peaceful, relaxing & stunningly beautiful!”

Smoky Cape Lighthouse is a wonderful place to stay if you are looking for something very peaceful & relaxing. While I love 5-star places, there is something special about staying at an historic place such as the Lighthouse. You actually stay in the old Lightkeeper's house, which is basically furnished, very clean and with a few modern things such as tv/video/microwave. Its fully self contained and spacious, with wider covered verandahs perfect for enjoying a late afternoon drink while listening to the ocean rolling in. There is a cottage facing the north (our preference) and one facing south. The southern side does have incredible views and is more private. The lighthouse also offers a B&B for those who prefer no cooking. There are beautiful walks available in the National Park, and a private, to die for beach. This place it has become a family tradition which we visit yearly. If you want a place to totally unwind, this is it!
