“Very Disappointing”

A should have relied on Trip Advisor! Unfortunately I read the reviews after I booked. I was expecting a heritage experience and was prepared for the fact that the hotel was old and historic. What I wasn't prepared for was the old and historic heating. I dont think the temperature in our room got anywhere near 17 c during the whole weekend, not even an electric blanket. Consequently our on suite was cold enough to make your breath steam, no heater there either.
A lot of the facilities are shut despite what the website says. There is no cafe and you cant get anything to eat in any area of the hotel other than the dining room before 5.30pm, so our thoughts of snuggling up by the fire with a book and a drink went out the window. The fire was there, thank goodness, as it was too cold to stay in our room. The spa is closed also.

If you are an Advantage Plus card holder for the Accor group be warned you can only use your card at dinner and even then it is a restricted menu. I have to say though the food was very good.

Overall it was disappointing, the hotel is old and lovely but does not welcome any visitors other than guests of the hotel. It is in sore need of some serious re furbishment. The rooms are small (OK it is heritage) but the furnishings are tired and worn. The heating definately needs some attention, the mountain wind whistles through the gaps in the windows.

“Lots of Heritage - but dated, and lacking service”

We have just returned from a weekend at the Hydro and had read the reviews on TA before going so had managed our expectations.

The hotel is great from a heritage perspective, it is nice to reminisce what it was like in it's glory days.

The room was what I would rate as average - clean, neat but nothing above that - you are paying for the heritage of the house. it is comparable to an average motel. The common rooms are nicely furnished with antiques.

The problem is the service - the staff are local teenagers who have no hospitality training. They are slow and not very many of them. Dinner which was a set menu - soup, main, desert took over 3 hours to serve - and drinks 20 mins to arrive.

Overall disappointing for the price paid.

“Don't waste $300 on this place”

My partner and I had high expectations of the Hydro Majestic in the Blue Mountains with most people saying "Ooohh, that's meant to be lovely!" which turned out to be so far from the truth!!!
On the outside, it looked like it had historical character but had had its day. On the inside, the room was a box, the shower curtain was ripped, the shower had the pressure of a water dribbler, the bath had peeled spots and the duvet cover was probably the "in" thing in the 1980s. Staff stood chatting, not wanting to answer enquiries or even look to be helpful. High Tea staff were wanting to look busy but could not accommodate one person in an empty room for a coffee. And on check out, where there should have been the usual "Did you enjoy your stay?" there was silence and not even a goodbye. For a place which was highly recommended, I would not even begin to rave about this one. For $300 with no inclusions and a standard valley room, you're much better off giving your money to a lovely couple at a b&b and not a giant like Accor.

  • Liked — The Masseur, who only worked at the hotel on Sundays
  • Disliked — The snobbery, tired rooms and lack of service for price paid

“Do Not Stay Here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2007

I would not recommend this hotel to any of my friends as we had a nightmare of a time there! We went up for the June long weekend as it
was our wedding anniversary. We booked a Deluxe Room as part of a Romantic Package. We arrived at the hotel and had to queue for 20 minutes to get to reception (no one came and helped with our bags). We were then advised to go to our room via the staff stairs. Our room
was freezing cold when we walked as there was no heating on. We found
out that the radiator had been disconeected and the reverse cycle air
con could only cope at about 21 degrees. In the end a small electric fan heater was brought and we had to leave it on all night.

The bed spread was stained along with the carpet and the chairs. In the bathroom, we found a sopping wet towel in the middle of the floor
and the bin ontop of the toilet seat! Our sparkling wine and strawberries were not provided. When I asked where they were, I was informed that it was my fault as we had changed our dates. I booked in February and NEVER changed my dates. We eventually received a bottle of wine and a few chocolates.

When we went to the reception to complain two other couples who checked in the same time as us were complaining. One were given a different room, the other was complaining that paint had been spilled all over their carpet and was it not an acceptable standard for the hotel. When we went back to our room, our next door neighbours were checking out. The room had been filthy and they had checked in elsewhere. However, they still had to pay for the substandard room as the hotel quoted their cancellation policy.

My husband and I were booked in for two nights but left after only one, as we did not want to spend our anniversary there. When we said to reception that we only wanted to pay for the one night due to substandard service and the room, we were told we had to pay 100% of the package fee due to the cancellation policy - even though this was
an issue of substandard service not a cancellation.

We then expected that we would have to drive back to Sydney but decided to drop into Lilianfels to check out the facilities 'for next
time' as we did not expect them to have any vacancies. Thank goodness
for Lilianfels! We arrived within minutes of them receiving a phone cancellation and we were able to check in straight away. We told them
what happened and we asked them to look after us. They certainly did that and more!!! We will certainly be going back to Lilianfels! They offered everything we wanted for a romantic weekend.
