“Will I ever stay in a Holiday Inn again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Like many others, I travel widely on business in the UK and put up with a Holiday Inn or Express for most nights away. The loyalty points come in very handy for family trips - the Holiday Inns are ok but sometimes pricey for what they are and the breakfasts are generally rank. Occasionally I travel to a place where there are no Holiday Inns and am forced to find an alternative. Occasionally you stumble across a gorgeous place like Solberge Hall.

For the same price as a HI Express, I stayed in what must have been a large country house, with a large warm bedroom (room 9 as per previous post), comfortable bed, large bathroom and heard not a peep from other guests. I didn't eat at the hotel in the evening, but the breakfast was spot on (nice thick bacon that you don't get down south / local sausages etc etc).

I'll be back in a couple of months for a few nights and know where i'll be staying

“Wonderful Hotel - Extortionate Restaurant Prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012 via mobile

Stayed here Saturday 4th February on a booking from laterooms.com. Hotel is amazing, lovely long drive up to the building, free parking. Rooms and restaurant very clean. We stayed in room 9 at the front of the hotel and heard no noise from any other guest. The bathroom was huge and the bed was very comfortable. We didn't intend to stay in the hotel for dinner, but due to the snow, we were pretty much forced too. I found the prices of the house wine reasonable - £15.95. But the food was completely overpriced. I had lamb, which was four small slices - one carrot and one parsnip, which cost £16.50. My boyfriend had sirloin steak and 9 chips - well presented but not enough food for almost £20!

Breakfast in the morning was included with the room rate and there was a wide selection of cereal, yogurts, toast, full Yorkshire breakfast, continental platter and a fish menu.

“A great hotel in a tranquil location”

Just returned from a fabulous stay at Solberge Hall. The location and style of the hotel are great. The staff are excellent, very friendly and attentive.
Room was great - very large with excellent quality furniture and fittings.

Restaurant was good - with great service again. Food good although the steak wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped. Overall still excellent.

Breakfast was superb - great quality food, well cooked.

Overall great - cant wait till we return.

“Good shared spaces, poor hotel room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2011

We stayed as part of a local charity event. The room was cold and there being an electric heater in the room we put it on. Within an hour the electric went off and it became clear that all the rooms in our block were in the dark because the occupants suffered the same fate as us and had put the heaters on to stay warm.
It took 4-5 hours to get the power back on so we had to change in the cold and dark and to be honest the staff were in a bit of a panic with no clear plan for how we would "enjoy" our rooms.
Regardless, this the hotel retains a bit of class in it's shared spaces but our room (15) was dated to say the least, only 5 TV channels on a TV older than me and various broken and dated items (see pictures).
We weren't offered a discount for our inconvenience so with respect to the management they took complete advantage of everyone's good nature.

“Cosy and very nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

Reading some of the older reviews for this hotel it would seem that it has undergone a management change after going into liquidation. It's very nice now!

The hotel itself is a lovely old building in nice grounds and a fabulous location, it's a bit off the beaten track but the surrounding countryside and views are great. I stayed here on business for one night in Dec 2011 and chose this mainly for the location which is fairly central for North Yorkshire and the North East.

Checking in was good, it's smallish hotel and the reception lady was friendly and helpful, probably never gets that busy for any delays and check-out was equally efficient.

The room was lovely, large and cosy with a good sized separate bathroom (the shower was a bit disappointing, an electric version so not much flow and the water temperature was a bit inconsistent), the bed was comfortable, only real complaint was the lack of a desk to work at, there was a dressing table with a stool so not very comfortable to work on a laptop for any length of time. Only terrestrial channels on the TV too, a bit of a let down for those of us who are used to 100 channels of repeats and rubbish!

I ate in the main restaurant at night and the food was superb if maybe a little pricey, £30 for 2 courses and a glass of wine, worth it for the quality but a touch over the top for normal dining although bar snacks were available and seemed to be reasonable value but I can't speak for the quality as I didn't have any. Service was excellent and the surroundings are very nice although the looped Christmas CD did start to grate. Breakfast was served in the same room and was fabulous (same music!) and included in the room rate.

Wifi was free and good, floorboards a bit noisy outside my room but, once every had gone to bed, the hotel was really quiet and I had a great night's sleep.

Overall? Very nice for £55/night, it's and old building so will always have quirks and will never be a modern, sleek hotel but, for me, that is a plus, it's nice waking up somewhere different from the usual business box.

Would I recomment it? Yes
Would I stay again? Definitely
