“Better Value Elsewhere!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 April 2007

We stayed at a number of places in Airlie Beach and this was by far the worst.

Although there were no obvious signs of anything untoward, the whole property seemed rather tired and in need of a bit of TLC.

We found that the prices asked at Whitsunday Wanderers were NOT good value in comparison to other motels in the area and found somewhere else as soon as prossible. The standard of the room was similar to that I imagine of a backpackers although at much inflated price!

On the positive side the location of the property is very good both for those who are staying in Airlie or going on one of the many sailing trips.

Our reason for choosing to stay here was based on the fact that we were staying on the 1st Jan and we were worried we wouldn't be able to find somewhere to stay if we left it until we got there. My advice would be - if booking in advance - only book one night at the Whitsunday Wanderers Resort which leaves you free to go elsewhere!

“Abysmal, Appalling, a Total Disgrace.”

WE DID NOT EVEN STAY ONE NIGHT. Even when we could not afford much in our early days in Australia we would not have slept in a room this bad. 23yrs later we definitely still won't. We tried without success to get our money back and are now trying to recoup from Blue Holidays who apparently don't inspect the accommodation they sell! Don't even think about staying here. The room, a so-called deluxe unit, smelled so strongly of bleach it was worse than a swimming pool, the fridge door was covered in rust, the air-conditioner had no control knobs and the room hadn't seen a lick of paint for a long time. My sister and her husband had an even worse room.

“Had trouble with tobacco smoke smell here; allergic folks stay away!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2007

I was looking for an inexpensive place to spend a few days in Airlie Beach, since I mostly planned to be out of the room. A travel agent recommended this motel. I made the big mistake of pre-paying the travel agent for my room, which pretty much obligated me to stay there, sight unseen, if I didn't want to lose the money I'd paid for my two night stay.

Eep, after this experience, I'm gonna swear off travel agent recommendations, if that tells you anything!

Although supposedly the policy in Queensland is that there's no smoking INSIDE hotel rooms, this hotel seemed to be adhering to the letter (quoting the policy when I mentiond that my room had a tobacco issue) but not the spirit (the only ashtrays provided were in the sleeping area AND kitchenette of my room, with none at all on the table on the balcony which is the only place one would actually be allowed to smoke... and why would one need MORE THAN ONE ash tray there?) of the regulation. As a result, I couldn't spend more than 15 minutes in my original room without starting to get an allergic reaction.

The hotel eventually moved me to an upgraded room (at no cost to me) in a different building, with windows on 3 sides which allowed me to get some cross-ventilation. Additionally, the upgraded room had a tile floor instead of the carpeted floor the other room had, so there were fewer places the tobacco smell could get into if the room did get smoked in. I gotta tell you, the upgraded room with large whirlpool spa tub (supposedly one of their honeymoon suites) wasn't half bad. It was very clean, had newish furniture and if that had been the totality of my experience at this motel, I probably would have rated it 3 stars. I've certainly stayed in many less well-maintained rooms. I'd recommend this motel ONLY if you're staying in one of the honeymoon suites.

Be warned that luggage storage is in an outside shed, and it gets WARM in Airlie Beach... so don't leave anything in your luggage that shouldn't get warm, like chocolate. ;-)

  • Liked — Location at the southern end of the Airlie Beach main strip
  • Disliked — Tobacco residue in my original room; most buildings didn't look very well maintained
  • Tips/Secrets — Stay here only if you get one of the honeymoon suite rooms

Yes, it was one NIGHT to remember. Never, never again. And may I say if we were staying for more than a night I would have forgone our money and MOVED ON.......

For the grand total of $174.00 a night that was for a family of 2 adults and 2 children, 12 & 14 year old boys, I was amazed when my eldest son said he didn't even want to sleep in any of the beds.

Then we saw our room, a Bungalow, 70's syle. The first thing I did was to strip the beds and ask for new sheets. The mattresses and pillows were stainded, and had NIL SUPPORT, at a guess, I would suggest they have not been replaced since the opening of the resort. The pillows were another matter. Yellow dribble stains everywhere, even small droplets of blood were visible on the casing. How is a place with such disregard for the basics of cleanliness be allowed to stay open.. SHAME ON THE OWNERS OF THIS RESORT.. They are obviously making money, I believe they should spend some of it.
There is most certainly a noise issue from the disco/pub near by..not being able to get to sleep until the pub closed which was around 4.30 in the morning,

MY OPINION - DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY

“Camping; stay away!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2006

We stayed for 1 night in June 2006, the campsite is a disgrace-we've been all over Oz & it's by far the worse campsite we've stayed at; including Western Australia roadhouses!!! The powered sites are in a muddy wooded area beside a dirty river-dont be fooled by the new looking offices/reception out the front, once in the campsite the true condition can be seen! The toilets are in need of a revamp, there are very few concreted paths around the ablution block, the laundry area looks like a scrapyard for washers/dryers & the condition of the whole campsite is dirty and unkempt. The noise from the nearby bar carries through to campsite also. I cant speak for the interior of the chalets which seems to be the main business of the resort, but externally some looked unkept & dirty also. Verdict: Stay away, there's a lot better parks in Airlie Beach.
