“Great renovations from new owner Sam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2011

I stayed here for a couple of nights last month. After returning a year later I found the Hotel has a new owner Sam. Great guy, very helpful. Sam has is a Canadian who has spent a lot of time in the DR and is renovatinng the hotel. The rooms were very clean, the hotel staff friendly. It would be hard to not have a good time at Hotel Palapa.

“Wonderful stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 February 2009

Within walking distance from town and just across the street from the gorgeous beach with a friendly bar, this was one of the most warmest friendliest environments I've ever traveled to. I was sad to go. The hotel is safe, clean, and everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful. The restaurant is magnificent, and the bar is welcoming and relaxing. As incredibly relaxing as this stay can be, it is also convenient to sight see as much or as little as one would like.

“Smelly Room”

While we stay one night, I was earnestly wished stay awaken untill next morning, the reasons are, 1) There is no inside door lock. 2) Too much fish kinds smell from washroom (Floor tiles are so dirty. 3)They did not changed bed sheets all 3 beds, we found may hairs inside sheets and sheets were so crimpled where people had slept. 4)Mosquitoes came in through unblocked back side wall.5) they charges extra US$10.00 for airconditioning per night, which they didn't mention it at the time of reservation.

Spring 2011, Hotel Palapa was taken over by new owners, who have given this well known property a thorough facelift, cleaning and refurbishing, with a mind to providing simple yet comfortable accommodations and excellent value in an ideally located hotel, situated both right on the beach and close to the center of town.

“Nice stay!”

My wife, son (2 years) and I had a great week at the Palapa Beach Hotel in Las Terrenas, Samana, recently.
The bungalow is quite big with two extra beds downstairs, a fridge, bath room, and room for clothes.
Upstairs there was a desk, a queen bed, a big closet, a safe w. key, and a baby crib we had asked for.
The hotel manager was very accomodating, and the breakfast in front of the hotel, feet in the sand and overlooking the beach, was simple but nice, and the two girls serving everything to meet our needs.
The bungalow was well cleaned every day, but the bath room was a bit outdated.
The beach in front is among the best on the northern Samana sea shore, but you should go 15-20 minutes east (near the El Portillo airport) to get very quiet and good snorkling conditions.
The hotel does not currently have a restaurant, but the bars and small restaurants under the palm trees on the beach are great and very fairly priced.
We took an airplane from Las Americas (Santo Domingo) airport, but the word is that by April/May 2008 a new expressway will be opened from the capital to Samana, reducing car travel time from 4-5 hours to about 2 hours.
Also, make sure you plan to do one or two excursions as the area is very nice. Car travel to the small villages seemed quite safe, and we had some great coffee in those spots, and very cheap goods.
Overall Las Terrenas and the Palapa Beach Hotel were great - we would not usually consider returning, but this might be the exception!

  • Liked — Great price/value, great location, beach
  • Disliked — More updated bath room

“Nice and Confortable Hotel in Las Terrenas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2007

I spent two nights at Palapa Beach Hotel in Las Terrenas in July 2007. My trip to las the Samana Peninsula was a side trip from my vacation to Dominican Republic.

I found the hotel by chance as I was driving into Las terrenas. We decided to stop and check it out because the atmosphere looked really cool. They had hamocks and tables outside and the hotel is located right across the street from the beach.

I was met by Jordy one of the guys that works in the wind kite center in the hotel and he contacted the owner for me. The owner showed us the bungalos and pool then we check in.

The place is very nice. the rooms are actually bungalos that can sleep upto 4 people. they have an up stairs and down stairs and a porch. I loved the decor. The only think I wish they had was a TV.

Bungalo 7 is perfect no problems at all. Bungalo 2 had some problems at the time of our stay. The hot water has some kind of trick to it. Tell the manager or whom ever is showing you the room to go over it with you. They didn't tell us and so when we went to complaint the next day she said "oh yes it does... it just has a trick" Also the airconditioner does not work in unit 2. This is not a problem if you are only using the bed up stairs but if you need to use the two single bed downstairs it will be a problem because it will be hot.

As I mentioned before the hotel has a pool. it is a nice pool with a small part sectioned off for children. the other part goes from 5 ft to 6ft deep. The first night we got there we jumped after dinner at around 9pm and the water was still warm. It was so beautiful to swim around under the stars.

Breakfast is included in the price for the room... and what a breakfst !!!! great breads, fruit, delicious omlets, and amazing fruit juices!!!! great great breakfast. Oh and the coffee !!!!

I want to give a special thanks to Jordy, his brother, and Juan Carlos for really making our short stay very pleasant.

Even if you decided not to stay at this hotel go check out their bar. They have delicious cocktails and they also have a Wind Kite and Surfing School !!!!!!!!

The only reason why I didn't give this hotel a 5 is because the owner has an attitude. As far as the instalations go the place is very nice and reasonably priced. the courtyard is lush and serene. I would just advise anyone to test out the airconditioner and payment terms before you book.... by the way they don't take credit cards... and she didn't tell me this until the very moment we were checking out !!!!!!

Oh and how could I almost forget to mention the Restaurant/Lounge upstairs.. I think it is called Sondemar.

It is a beautiful space with great food and friendly service !!!! They cater more to a European crowd so they aren't familiar with some cocktails but you just have to tell them what is in it and they will mix it for you!!!!!
