“We wanted to stay longer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2008

This is a really great place to stay. The owners, Neil and Craig, make you feel very welcome and cannot do enough for you. Their life is made easier by Helen and Trevor (and the fabulous chef whose name escapes me for now ).

We stayed there for 3 nights over Easter and ate there for 2 of those nights (on the third night we were meeting friends otherwise we would have eaten there). The wine and food is delicious.

Highlights include: a beautiful and peaceful location, close enough to all the vineyards, and the towns of Napier, Hastings and Havelock North, Helen - who is in charge of breakfast and is charming (one morning she went out of her way to get us a lunch booking at a vineyard - no mean feat on Easter Monday - and organised our entire day for us), Trevor's afternoon tea - just the ticket after a day out - always accompanied by shortbread or something else tasty.

Disadvantages: there aren't really any. Obviously, if you want a nightclub then this area is not for you?!

In terms of price, a stay at any of the NZ lodges is a treat; compared to a motel or chain hotel you do pay top dollar. Having said that at Greenhill everything we ate or drank was included so the bill did not come as a surprise. Also, the motels and chain motels in NZ (while clean and functional) do not tend to be places you want to spend much time at during the day/afternoon. At Greenhill you can be as lazy or active as you like. Most of the guests seemed to go out after breakfast and came back mid afternoon for tea and a rest before drinks and canapes in the lounge!

We will go back one day (hopefully soon).

“A Wonderful Christmas”

We stayed here over Christmas 2007 and thoroughly agree with the other great reviews posted on Tripadvisor. The location is just fabulous and the accommodation was among the best we experienced during our NZ trip. The food and wine were first class throughout, we were very well looked after and we were very sad to leave on Boxing Day. We even received a lovely gift of local olive oil, which is excellent. If you are travelling near Hastings come and stay here.

“One incredible homestead”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 March 2007

This is a beautiful renovation of a spectacular farmhouse set on top of a hill overlooking a Napa-valleyesque surrounding. Hawkes Bay wineries are reachable within minutes, and Hastings and N. Hadlock ( a cute little town) are both available for nice dining. But, you need not go far for great food. The breakfasts and dinners were first class there, as were the accomodations. Rooms were very comfortable and charming. The house is beautifully decorated and meticulously cared for. The grounds are stunning.

Napier, the town that was rebuilt in art deco style after the devastating 1931 earthquake, is about a half hour drive away.

The hosts, Neil and Craig, could not be nicer, and although we had the luxury of no other guests the evening we were there, they both took the time to make us feel at home and have a couple of glasses of wine with us. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone traveling in NZ. Its first class through and through.

“High Victorian Solitude in the Heart of Wine Country”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2005

This charming Victorian estate is situated on the crest of a small, but commanding knoll surrounded by rolling lush green hills dotted with grazing sheep. We couldn't have imagined a more welcoming experience starting with the tree-lined entrance lane up the hill which was guarded by mason lions. The building sits majestic with its red roof and white walls contrasting against the green valleys; its tower reaching up to offer a full view of the surrounding countryside all the way to the ocean.

We thoroughly enjoyed the innkeepers, their hospitality and fine cooking. Their interior decor shows they have great taste, mixing newer and more modern pieces of furniture with the victorian bones of the building. They make it work by tying local New Zealand native pieces into the fabric of the design. Friendly and inviting they gave us fantastic recommendations for our visit.

Among the most impressive points about this property is its location. We webbed out from the estate in all directions, embibing at the varous wineries and sight-seeing throughout the region. The local dining is fantastic and you'll find yourself debating as to whether you want to "go out to dinner" or dine in on the innkeepers' faire. Either way, you'll go to bed stuffed and satisfield.

We cannot say enough about this property and we have recommended it to many friends and to many business acquaintances. Likewise, we extend to you our positive impression and wonderful experience of the place. Go there and enjoy yourselves.
