The Highway One Motel is located about 3 kilometres from the centre of Port Augusta, so if you're coming from Adelaide, it's on your left just on the edge of town, so you can't miss it. The Coles Express service station is just next door. However, it's not walking distance into the Port Augusta town centre unless you've got half an hour to spare.
Highway One Motel is an older-style motel, with very reasonable room rates. The cheapest rooms are what they call the "front rooms", but I'd be a bit wary of the fact that front the highway. I went for their deluxe rooms (their best rooms) which are located at the rear of the property, so you don't get bothered by traffic noise from the highway.
Note that the deluxe rooms are quite different to the standard rooms, so keep that in mind if you're considering a stay here.
The deluxe room I was in was almost like a home unit, with brick walls, cathedral ceiling, a spacious living area (where the bed is) and a kitchenette with sink, microwave, fridge and 2 hot plates. I even got a carport to park my vehicle under, which was a nice touch, while those people not staying in deluxe rooms had to park outside their rooms in the sun! The deluxe room was clean and the reverse-cycle air-conditioning quickly heated the room up on the chilly night of my arrival.
There's a restaurant on-site which is open 6 nights a week (Monday to Saturday). I ate there on the Saturday night and the food was good and the servings generous in size. The menu was quite extensive - plenty of steak and fish choices - plus a dessert menu.
Very happy with the service at both the motel and restaurant, so no complaints.
Overall, a pleasant stay with the convenience of a restaurant on-site, plus the spaciousness of a deluxe room which was almost like a unit. The rooms, although clean and tidy, could do with a refurbishment, but then they wouldn't be available at those budget prices.
Room Tip: To avoid the highway noise, choose a deluxe room at the rear of the property
