This is a great motor lodge. The staff were very friendly and the quality of the room was fantastic. Indeed, I've can't say I've ever experienced a better quality motor lodge anywhere in the world (and I travel a lot).
I only used Greymouth as a stop over between long driving days on the South Island but this place surprised me. Well done to the proprietor and staff for putting together such a great place.
That being said however, it is still in Greymouth (which is not worth visiting even if you are a fan of Monteiths beer/cider) and the area that the motor lodge is in is quite grim. The next motor lodge along (the Aachen Motor Lodge) had about 5 police cars in its car park which seemed to be crime related (just a bit).
All of that aside, however, this is a great place to drop anchor on your way around the stunning South Island - highly recommended

Travelled to this motel recently with my elderly parents who were on holiday from overseas. Our first impression when we arrived at the motel reception, was a very unfriendly woman who came to our assistance from a hidden office. The gentleman was busy on the phone and she was buzzed to assist us. She just rambled on our motel room numbers, took off in a hurry, put our milk in the fridge took off again without even saying "please enjoy your stay". We all have bad days, but at the end of the day customers keep your business going and word of mouth is the best form of advertisement as well. This motel is rated number 1, but honestly there was nothing fabulous about the interior and the beds certainly need an upgrade! Thank heavens we only stayed one night, it was more than enough.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the Gables; clean, well presented but very standard NZ motel fare; you park outside the only door to you unit which is one of a number around a car park.

It's a little way out of the centre, but it's near a supermarket and pizza place.

The worst thing is Greymouth itself. My advice would be; if you need to be in Greymouth then The Gables is recommended, but if at all possible stay in Hokitika as it's a MUCH nicer place and only 30 or so KM away.
