“Average standard - disappointing for a Host motel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 April 2012

We had been staying at Host Group motels for 7 weeks because we found that they are a good standard and there uis a $100 discount for every twelfth night stayed.Shortlands was a pleasant enough stay but did not offer as much as previous stays. For example,at the
Teal Motel in Gisborne & Whitianga Beachside Resort, for $150 per night we had separate bedrooms, large living areas and a swimming pool - At Shortlands we had one living/bedroom, no pool for a charge of $168 a night. Admittedly,we did have a spa bath but were offered no choice and I would rather have not had it.We had pre-booked and were dismayed that the room was very stuffy and had not been aired. On the patio, the garden furniture was wet and grubby, from the previous night's rain and there was dirt & dead flies laying in the runner of the sliding doors. The rooms generally were comfortable and clean but not great value and the motel is positioned at the junction of 2 main roads - but we were not disturbed too much from traffic noise.

We are a corporate property not a resort. Therefore we do not supply swimming pools and play areas. We do supply everything for the corporate traveler. This visit was over Easter and naturally full price is charged. A week later the room would have cost $150. We do have 1 bedroom apartments but obviously they had been pre booked. No there should not have been a fly in the ranchslider track and the staff and I have spoken about that.
I findit difficult to believe that the room was stuffy as we close the rooms up at 4.p.m.
The outside furniture is dried down daily when we clean but if it should rain it will get wet again.
I am sorry that they felt their experience was less than they were expecting. Why did they not come and speak to us

“Would AVOID this motel!! Not safe! Burgled more than ONCE!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 March 2012

We stayed in this motel on Christmas Eve and Christmas night, a time of year you expect good service, friendliness, warmth and enjoyment. This is not what we got from this motel.

Our Room was NOT ONCE CLEANED during our 2 night stay, beds were not made, towels were not changed, bins were not emptied... In fact no one ventured into our room at all...

EXCEPT that is, for the people that came into our room and robbed us on Christmas night as we slept. They took everything including all personal items, phones, ipods, car keys, cameras, wallets, purses etc and ALL christmas presents!

Now being the safety conscience people that we are, i assured the door was locked when we left in the morning, and arriving back at midnight was shocked that our front door key card wouldn't work, so had to get it changed at reception. Once in, being as late as it was, off to sleep... Only to find in the morning everything was gone!

When I turned up at reception, landlady rang police...
When we were leaving, we were charged FULL PRICE as the landlady jokingly retold tales of the same people she thinks burgled our room, robbing their motel in the past... Just what we wanted to hear!
Being robbed in the middle of the night from around our beds while we slept is one of the most traumatic experiences we have faced.

The landlady in an email back to me explained it was our own fault and the doors must have been left open! Seeing as i know 100% they were locked, the place has been robbed before and strangely the key card wouldn't work, it was all a bit too strange!
The motel took NO responsibility for what happened, made no offer of any reductions in price due to our unfortunate circumstances and lets NOT forget, didn't once clean the room, which also in the email, the landlady said I had told them I didn't need them to clean the room!! Which again was another lie. (Landlady will probably reply to this, although everything I have written here is in the email she sent to me)

This Motel is NOT SAFE and I would recommend everyone staying somewhere other than here!!

When people are upset they tend to exaggerate. Over the Christmas period 3 motels on the strip were burgled on the same night. The police were called in .Only at our property did they get into the room . In all other cases they only stole from cars. Our rooms have card locks on the main entrance and they cancel at 10 a.m the next morning . there is no way that those doors can be forced open. The ranchslider onto the patio has a dead lock on it and a bolt . If these had been used there is no way that anyone could have got into the room. The police found no evidence of forced entry. The police concluded that the ranchslider was left unsecured. sometimes cards will de-programme and have to be reset. If a card is put near a cell phone or some other electrical device this can happen. The guest have admitted that when they returned to their room at midnight nothing had been taken and the theft occurred while they were asleep in an average sized studio room. If the doors had in anyway been forced they would surely have heard as the bed is within 3 feet of the door On Xmas morning their room was not serviced because as they left to go out for lunch they said every thing was fine. Other people staying had their rooms serviced. In the case of theft from a Motel it is normal for the client to claim on their insurance policy and their insurance company would come back to our insurance if they felt we had been negligent. It is normal to pay full price foe the room even in this case. Had the room been properly secured no one could have entered it. I am sorry for their experience but we must all take responsibility for our own security

We can't imagine how they ever received good reviews on AAA trevel - it is more than strange. How could this more than dated motel with overrated prices achieve four stars? We were upset about the fact having booked for more than one night.

These rooms were opened in 2005. So they are not old. They chose to have a studio and they knew the price when that made the booking. It should be noted that the room in question had a double spa bath, a super kingsize bed, a 32 inch LCD television, a DVD player, a CD plyer, a private patio with outdoor furniture, Plunger coffee and a variety of beverages. This is why it is a 4 star property. Unfortunately there are people around who expect 4 star quality at a 2 star price, Maybe in future they should consider staying at a backpackers.

“Unfriendly, unprofessional and drunk proprietor”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2008

We arrived late (after 8.30pm) and in the motel office, we were greeted by a bit too jolly landlady who, seeing we were foreigners, told us in very slurred speech we'd have to pay the top room rate 'since mid-November is high season' . We did not have much of a choice so we took the room.
Accomodation was ok but we did not appreciate being taken advantage of, especially by a barely coherent and completely drunk motel owner.

The following morning Madame was less than jolly (hung over, I suppose?) and made us feel quite unwelcome. We left well before the 10am check out time and frankly would never go back.

Best drive straight through Thames to the town of Coromandel!

It has taken me a long time to answer this as I feel it is so dishonest
1.I do not drink . So how could I be drunk.
2. November is one of our busiest months of the year and full rates apply

I have nothing else to say
