“Great location, Great staff, Great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

First up the location is to die for. Right in the heart of the vibey, pulsating, restaurant/bar area of St Kilda. Only a 5-min walk to Acland St, Luna Park and many famous pubs. We stayed two nights on a busy public holiday weekend but yet received stellar service form the staff here. I hope the management reads this because Amy and Mareeka (nfi how to spell that!) were excellent at their job providing prompt, knowledgeable, friendly assistance and this really gave URBAN a point of difference to other places where we have recently stayed.

Our stay wasn't without its problems (the first room we got had problems with the toilet flushing correctly) but these were addressed instantly without fuss (we were upgraded to a larger/ nicer room!). The bed and pillows in particular in both rooms were sensationally comfortable.

Our package worked out to $180 per night including free access to the St Kilda baths and free in room breakfast plus a late checkout on the Sunday of 2:00! The breakfast were delicious and the free access to the St Kilda baths was so terrific as it saved us $26 a day and allowed us to walk from URBAN to there (about 4min walk) and do a workout/swim and burn off the calories attained by dining, drinking etc in this exciting, eclectic strip full of tremendous options for enjoying oneself. The St Kilda baths are located on the beach and so to frolick along the beach after an intense bit of exercise was also a wonderful sensation.

Couldn't recommend the place highly enough - especially so if the same staff are on hand.

Hi MarcusGeelong,

We always love hearing from a fellow St Kilda lover! You could get us talking (writing) for hours about all the things we love about the area.

How good are the Urban Snorer beds! Some of us here at head office are seriously considering purchasing them for our homes. What a pain about the toilet not flushing correctly, but kind of cool that it happened given that you ended up with a better room ;-)

So glad to hear you took advantage of your free access to St Kilda Sea Baths, and your frolic along on the beach sounds a bit exciting!

We'll be sure to pass on your lovely comments to Amy and Marieke.

Thank you so much for your review!

Kind Regards,
Caitlin

“Great Spot to Spend a Weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Fabulous location. Right in the heart of the restaurant & bar scene and only a couple of minutes walk to beautiful St Kilda beach.
Hotel Urban is a quirky little boutique style hotel. Its nothing spectacular but it modern, clean and the rooms/beds/pillows very comfortable. I received fabulous service from the hotel Manager when my TV wouldn't work and was made to feel very welcome over the weekend stay.
I had a room right on the street front and didn't hear any noise from the street below. The same cant be said about the noise coming from the room next door, but I guess this can happen in any hotel.
Suger the cafe/bar did fabulous coffee & breakfast but the service was slow and could have been alot friendlier. This changed Monday morning when the manager was back in the building.
I would reccomend this hotel to couples & friends travelling - it was perfect for me as a solo traveller & I felt safe and comfortable there on my own (I was stuck in Melbourne over the weekend due to business meetings on Friday & Monday - no point travelling back to NZ)

Room Tip: The spa bath was a nice additiona after a day on the beach

Hi KiwiGirl69,

When travelling on your own it's so important to feel safe and comfortable, and we're really happy you felt that way with us. Just as importantly, it's great to hear you ended up having a fun weekend stay in Melbourne!

Our General Manager is lovely and we're glad he got your TV back in action. We're very pleased to hear you took advantage of the delicious breakfast and coffee available at Suger Café Bar, we're often adding new things to the menu too :-)

It sounds like you had a great service experience, but we're not sure why service would have been slower and not as friendly on the Saturday, were staff really busy? Regardless, being busy isn't really an excuse and we'll see what happened there.

Thanks for your review and we look forward to seeing you next time you're in Melbourne!

Kind Regards,
Caitlin

“Mixed feelings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

The service from staff was great, as you'd probably expect from even a 5-star hotel, and knew what they were talking about and didn't keep you hanging around.

I arrived a few hours early but was allowed to check-in earlier. I was slightly disappointed by the standard of the room considering it was $200 a night (a night at the Sheraton is about the same, as well as the Prince Hotel just down the street) and had a funny odour.

I asked if the person(s) staying the night before were smelly as sometimes BO can linger for some time. The lady on reception was very helpful, didn't question me and offered another room immediately which was great.

The second room was a lot bigger and felt nicer (not sure if I scored an upgrade) and the stay went without a hitch. Oh, and they give you complimentary use of the St Kilda sea baths which I thought was great. You can use their sauna facilities as well.

*apparently the de-sanitiser they used was the cause of the smell (how ironic) but they were helpful in giving me another room nonetheless.

*if you're staying to the rear of the hotel, be careful not to be bothered by the trucks that seem to pull up every 10mins in the morning. They're quite loud and idle on the street just below the window.

*I'd recommend checking out the Prince Hotel on their prices as it is really nice.

Hi Karl C,

Thanks so much for your review.

We are very proud of our gorgeous staff, and are so happy to hear they looked after you at a top standard and kept things moving for you – nothing worse than hanging around in a hotel lobby when you're hanging to get to your room after travelling.

It's important to us to try to be flexible when we can be, so of course if we are able to check you in earlier, or move your room, or even give you an upgrade, we do it.

We agree with you about the Prince Hotel – it's lovely and we will be the first to admit it!

Thanks again for your review and we hope you come and visit us again!

Kind Regards,
Caitlin

“Good Business Option”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

I've stayed at Urban a few times recently and despite the hot water issue recently I'll stay here again.

The hotel is really convenient and it's easy to get out and get a good meal - either flashy or economical within 2 mins of the hotel.

The hotel staff are always quite friendly and the cafe at the front serves a good coffee and breakfast.

My only concern is the hotel is starting to show it's age. I really think they need to start renovating or updating some of the rooms.

Oh, the one (1) elevator that serves 4 floors is stupidly slow. I can't believe the owners haven't upgraded this...

Room Tip: Try to not be right at the front of the hotel as you'll get (a) road/tram noise, and (b) street...

Hi markpk27,

Thanks for taking the time to let us know about your stay with us. I wonder what your favourite restaurant was… so many fantastic choices nearby! Of course Suger Café Bar is fantastic for brekkie, lunch and dinner if you want to grab something at the hotel.

Hope to see you again.

“St Kilda is great!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

The location is great. The hotel is near the water and restaurants. I stayed there for three weeks on business and I was never at a loss for something to do in the evening.
The standard rooms are a bit small but clean with parking in the back. Normally there is a charge for parking but the made it complimentary to me because of the length of my stay.
The staff was helpful especially AFTER the stay. I needed some help to straighten out some things with the toll system and they were VERY helpful. I'd love to go back.
