We were booked in here by a travel agency, and I confess I was filled with trepidation when I read the TripAdvisor reviews. I therefore rang the hotel and volunteered to pay the $30/night upgrade to one of their refurbished King bed rooms: a really smart decision, as it turned out!
We were put in a corner room at the end of a corridor, far away from the running, screaming children who seemed to run from room to room and then to the lifts.
The corner situation meant we could open two windows and get a fantastic cross breeze on hot and sticky nights, which meant we didn't need to use their freestanding aircon unit very often. Thank goodness, because the thing had two speeds: 'gale force' and 'off'. The noise was deafening and the carpet around the unit would become soaked through with water from condensation.
Despite this being a 100% non-smoking hotel, we smelled smoke for days coming out of a room opposite which had its 'do not disturb' on for days. Reported it to the desk, which sprayed room spray outside our room. It would have been better to confront the smokers, but ...
Lovely flat-screen tv, tea/coffee making, bar fridge. All good. APPALLING quality mattress. You could hear the springs go when you sat in it and my back was stuffed after the first night. The refurb should really have included decent mattresses, but this is not the first - and probably won't be the last - hotel we've stayed in which seems to have neglected guests' comfort in the bed department.
My only other quibble was a charge error. When we checked in, there was a neck tag which stated that whatever it had been attached to would cost us $6.50. Since there was nothing attached, we took the tag down to reception immediately after checking in. No worries, we were told, they would make a note of it. Guess what was on our bill when we checked out? You guessed it: the $6.50 (apparently for a bottle of water). It was taken back OFF the bill, but it's just niggling a bit ... staff should follow through.
There is no pool, which is a shame during the summer, but we enjoyed the central location and the lovely corner room. Didn't try any of the restaurant fare, either ...
Some cute shops in a plaza around the back, including Vietnamese and Italian restaurants.
I believe this was recently a Novotel hotel ... not sure why the chain withdrew, but the only Accor property in Launceston now is the Mercure, just around the corner.
Probably not returning to Launceston, but if we did, would have no hesitation staying here again, as long as it was in one of the refurbished rooms!
Room Tip: Definitely go for the upgrade to a refurbished king bed room
