“Quality Accommodation, but VERY small room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2009

We took the "fantastic deal" on an executive room for AUD99 room only from the hotel's website.
Good Points. Very good quality bed, linen, furnishings and toiletries. Right in the centre of town. Had a good night's sleep on a comfortable bed in a quiet room.
Not So Good Points. The room was VERY small and there was nowhere except the floor to put our luggage.
This would be a good room for a sole business traveller as there was a desk, good lighting and a comfy bed. Also suited to a couple who want only one night's accommodation. The other motels in Toowoomba looked to be a class below the B & W and many were located on the edge of town, not near anything else. The restaurant in the bar below serves good wholesome country food and the roast of the day was on special for only around AUD9 - it was tasty with some beautifully dooked vegies.

“Tacky and Tired”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2009

In January, I stayed for 2 nights at this hotel and it was very disappointing. The hotel claims to be one of the best in Toowoomba - a huge exageration. I arrived late only to find I had to park on the street as the small carpark was full. I was greeted at the entrance by a smoking area , butts on the ground, tacky matting and a very tired appearance. Not to be discouraged, I assumed this was just the exterior and entered the hotel to find a shabby foyer, darkly lit with a shredded red rug which looked like it had far outworn its years.
The lady at reception was less than friendly and barely looked up whilst I registered. There was no warm friendly welcome here!
My room was small but reasonable. Not as tired as the public areas, however the bathroom was tiny and hardly room to swing a cat. No shelving or space to put any toiletries etc.
My experience of breakfast the next morning was diabolical. I was told to dine in the bistro which looked like something out of the last century! I asked for the main Restaurant which is advertised on the website and was told the owner had closed it as a cost saving initiative. Forcing guests to eat breakfast in the bistro which was more like a bar and full of gaming machines was not my idea of a 4 star accommodation facility. Needless to say, when I was told that this was again the only place to have dinner because the bar and restaurant were no longer opening, I chose to dine at Splash down the road. A much nicer experience and enjoyable meal indeed. When commenting to the staff in this establishment about how disappointed I was at the Burke and Wills, they explained that the hotel had really deteriorated with new owners and was no longer the establishment it had once been. I wondered if this was why Quality Choice Hotels had chosed to disengage their services. I would not recommend this hotel to corporate travellers at all. Best to go 2 doors down to the new apartment complex next door to Splash restaurant.

“Don't Stay at Burke & Wills it is not 4 Star”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2008

The Burke & Wills is a very long way from a 4 Star establishment. Our room was the most expensive " Spa Room " ( with the current water restrictions you are asked not to waste water by using the spa you have just paid extra to have !!)With the views of neighboring rusting roof tops and crumbling fixtures and posts on the balcony to the out of date products in the mini bar + you have to pay if you would like to watch anything other than the local stations. We not only paid $220 to much for our stay on returning from diner we were told that we would have to park our vehicle on the street over night as the parking for the hotel ( which is about 40 spaces for a 200 room hotel ) was full. You have the choice of parking your vehicle infront of two pubs down the main street or in a dark ally way behind the hotel. + the hotel will take no responsability for any damage caused to your vehicle in these areas ! Breakfast was a joke, the food was straight from the hostel and not at all as discribed in their own website or brochure. The staff that are there are mostly pleasant but there is a clear lack of leadership.Management can only be discribed as laughable. We tavel alot, both in Australia and Abroad and have stayed in some 3 star establishments which to their credit are far superior compared to the Burke & Wills - We will never ever stay here again.

“A favourite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2008

The Burke and Wills is one of my favourite hotels in Australia. I have stayed there several time and the rooms are always spotlessly clean. The decor is classy and welcoming, and the bed is awesome - big and comfy. We ordered room service and it was prompt and tasty. It is right in the centre of town, close to the nightlife but till very quiet. I would highly recommend this hotel.

“as ver nice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2008

We have stayed at the Mercure in Toowoomba a few times over th last 6 years. For price and location, I think its great. I do agree with previous review, that staff in resturant could be more foused and food prompt...however still exceptable!!. Rooms clean, walk to mall and so cheap..We will go back and recommend it to others, including those with children.

  • Liked — close, tidy and well priced...also had breaky included first time we visited...think 2004?
