2 km short of Finch Hatton Gorge (Eungella National Park) we found the Platypus Bush Camp. Some fellow campers had already set up camp in the camp ground which offers limited sites for camper trailers but lots of space for walk-in tent camping and campervans, a communal fire place and a kitchen shelter. Wazza asked a very friendly Canadian couple to move their Jucy van a couple of metres so we could nudge our camper trailer into a level niche next to the creek that flows through the property -- no fuss!
Once the tent was up, we went to explore Wazza's unique rainforest retreat. What a place! The sparkling clear creek safe to swim in (no crocs, stingers or other nasties), rustic bush toilets, showers with a view, hot water from a wood-fired oven – all nestled into dense rainforest vegetation complete with over 50 species of birds, possums and monstrous green tree frogs that keep the mozzies at bay.
And the huts...next time we're going to stay in one of the timber huts!
They're open to all sides, the beds have a mozzie net (which would only be needed at certain times of the year) and containers for your toiletries and and valuables to keep them safe from any nocturnal wildlife that's free to come and go.
The platypus viewing pool was only a short stroll upstream from where we were camped. No swimming or fishing here, no disturbing the wildlife! And, yes, together with a small group of fellow travellers we did spot platypus early in the morning and around dusk while we were staying at Platypus Bush Camp.
This place is suitable for nature lovers, for travellers who embrace the idea of eco tourism and are willing to make the effort to reduce their impact on the environment to a minimum.
Travellers who are not afraid of "too much nature" and don't expect room service will love this place!
