“Things that make you go HMMMM”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2006

Staff were extremely friendly and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. I should have read the reviews before going though, as the airport was extremely close and the noise was horrible. The spa wasn't heated and was too cold to go in, the pool wasn't heated either but the water was slightly warmer than the spa. The beach was lovely but the low tides were a pain with the water going out at least a couple of kilometre making for an extremely long walk just to have a swim. The villas were tastefully decorated with all the essentials. We ate at muddies restaurant on our final night there and wished we had of done the first night rather than going into town to other restaurants. The food was extremely good value and absolutely superb. The kids meals were HUGE.
It rained most of the time we were there though making it extremely difficult to keep the kids amused. We didn't find a kids playroom, am assuming it no longer exists as there were a lot of children there with parents as exasperated as us trying to keep them amused. Overall the resort was fair, although mackay itself was a big dissapointment with very few things to do when its raining.

“Overal a little disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2006

The location of the resort right next to the beach is very nice. The Villa's are comfortable though I was disappointed that there was no microwave in the kitchen. I was also a little disappointed that there ws no TV or airconditioner in the bedroom. My main gripe was that you are many kilometers from any facilities and there is no shuttle bus into the city. The taxi fare was around $15. Even to get a newspapr (there was none available at reception) required a walk to the nearest corner store of almost 40 minutes (and I am a fairly quick walker). The pool and spa were also far too cold to use. I would have liked them to be heated. As the place is next to the airport be prepared for the sounds of jet aircraft flying just over your head though thankfully Mackay airport is not particuarly busy. Also don't be fooled that because the resort is close to the airport it is easy to get to. The route between the two is very convulted and it cost me $14 in taxi fares. Finally I was amazed that recpetion closed at 5pm weekdays at at 11am on Sunday. What's the caper with this? Sounds like penny pinching at its worst.

  • Liked — It was right on the beach but you cant swim cause of the stingers
  • Disliked — it was lacking basic services and facilities
  • Tips/Secrets — If you plan to stay here hire a car as you are a long way from anything

“Don't stay here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2006

A group of us booked 11 units at Illawong Beach Resort and were very disappointed. We checked before booking that they had a BBQ as we wanted to cook together. It had been broken for some time and no effort was made to fix it. There was a tennis tournament on at the time which was why we were there. There were other tennis groups there too who also wanted the BBQ for their groups, but no luck. It advertised a games room, but did state that it was only open in the school holidays. As there were so many kids there for the tennis I asked if it could be opened. It wasn't and I later found out that it was basically non-existant and hadn't been opened for at least the last 8 months. Our unit had no battery in the smoke detector and then we were given a flat one to put in. Units are serviced if you stay over 7 days. We stayed 8 and no one touched our unit. It is a self-contained unit, but it was very hard to cook. Some (few) units had microwaves. Our unit had enamel saucepans that were flaking. Some units had no saucepans, frypans or sharp knives. It also said it had a tennis court available with lights to 9pm. It was in serious need of resurfacing as the surface had plants and sand and cracks, making it quite unsafe. The lights worked up one end. The other end had one light working, but not really facing the court. TV worked in our unit, but others only got 2 channels and not austar as advertised. We asked to meet with the manager, but he would not meet us. Finally he came down on the last night and was unhelpful and uncaring.

  • Liked — was convenient to tennis courts
  • Disliked — lack of advertised facilities and unhelpful manager
  • Tips/Secrets — don't go. Just down the road is ocean resort village where others in our group stayed. They loved it.

“Very nice place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2006

Very nice place. Quiet location, however not within walking distance of anything, so a car is strongly recommended. Close to the runway of Mackay Airport, which causes occasional noise, but don't worry, it's not a very busy airport.

We enjoyed the pool with shady places around. Each bungalow has 2 bedrooms, however only one airconditioner in the living room. In the hot season it may be necessary to leave the door to the living room open to get some cool air at night.
